The brutal politics of a large industry is really no different than any large company.

This is true of pretty much any modern global mega-corp unfortunately. Though I enjoyed my time at a major tier 1 supplier, I was always reminded that I am just a number, no matter how personable and awesome my manager and team were.

I left the auto industry and moved back south for family reasons, and settled for a slightly lower pay, higher cost of living, but an overall broader "many hats" engineering role. Fast-paced family-owned business, so the raises came quick. Even got into a management role after a year or so. Though I dreaded leaving behind my "dream" job as a literal engine engineer, I grew so much more as a person and engineer in that first year away than my entire time in the auto industry.

All this to say, you never know where life will take you and how well it can work out. Good luck with your new experience.

Why did you answer a "work call" on vacation?

Engineers are on call 24/7 in the modern world.  Phone rings at night, weekends, vacations.  We're expected to answer.

I'm an engineer and my new job is different.  They absolutely will never call me on vacation.  It's been an adjustment getting used to it.  Now when I'm working, yes I can get a call at any time and be expected to respond.

Disagree.  The worker needs to define the boundary where they can be called.  Sure, some jobs, you are "on call" quite a lot.  But on vacation?  No.  That honestly means vacation is not vacation- just working away from work.

to reach, and stay at, the Director level, i'm sure there's a different expectation for answering calls while on vacation.

Maybe.  But it drives me crazy that companies pretend that not being on actual vacation is good for them.

Nope. Leave a message. There should be a backup person always when you are away. Just continuing on with "tradition" is going to kill you off sooner. berkeley that.

The only thing worse than being let go via a phone call while on vacation is being let go via a voice message while on vacation......

how was not taking the call going to make things better, bro?
