I hear you. We've had to make that call too many times, and it sucks, but quality of life is what's the most important.

I was having this discussion with a friend recently. He said something along the lines of "$1000? Goodbye dog." He was driving a brand new family sedan and also had a brand new family SUV. I was saddened to hear that :(
I love my dog. He brings me more happiness than any car will, and he's more loyal than most cars as well . I haven't found my limit, and hopefully I'm never in that situation. I'm sure its 5 figures.
Even trying to comprehend the eventuality of losing Sunny, just about completely shuts me down. No idea how much $, but multiple challenge cars, both in terms of the budget and the work involved would be just fine with me if it meant he was able to continue a happy life.
He is out of surgery. The vet found an obstruction in his abdomen and was able to resolve it without sectioning his intestine. Time for barley treats.
Good news! I must say that you're not out of the woods yet. Keep his activity level very restrained until the vet gives the ok. Nothing worse than thinking that all the hard stuff is behind you only to see your buddy flop over with no warning 3 days later because of a blood clot.
I grew up on a farm in the country with wild animals so pets were, how shall I put this? Disposable. Animals were raised for food (no not cats and dogs), so I probably have a different perspective than most.
If I had all the money back that I spent on vet care for the number of dogs that we've owned................I'd have a really really nice car, or cars even! Car can't love you back like dogs do, tho. I'll take the doggie love.
PS -- I did try to start to tally things up -- stopped at the $6k across 2 dogs and 4 knee surgeries, $1200 for emergency surgery for my epileptic golden. There is much much more where that came from. I don't keep track of vet bills for much the same reason I don't keep track of $$$ spent on cars.
Yeah, knock on forehead I've been lucky with Chewie these last two years, although he was hesitant to eat his treats and breakfast this morning, very much not like him, and had me concerned. But then he drank water, pooped a normal poop outside and played a little tug of war before I left, so I think he just had an unsettled stomach.
The ex-SWMBO was quite far into the $$ with her French Bulldog years ago. And I know I'd go pretty far into the red if it came to it.
My brother spent like 3 grand sending his pos lab to chemo. I hated that berkeleying dog. Then, the dog died anyway, and his wife left him (she was the one that prompted him to keep the dog alive).
Personally, ive got about 750 bucks into pets, period. Mostly at my ex wife's behest. I won't do it again. I'm not against animals of any fashion, but I am not putting them in my care. If swmbo wants cats (and she did) it's on her to pay for them (and she does).
Although I might not drop a big chunk of change at one time, SWMBO and I have allowed pets to nickle and dime us pretty good over the years. We once paid for thyroid meds for our cat for over a year. This came with the special bonus of picking up pills for "Daisy Cat" at Walgreens every month or so.
The number of Challenge cars I could have built with the money we've spent on our "kids"...
All totally worth it.
I'm facing a bill of in the neighborhood of $1000 for dental work on my 14 yo lovable mutt, this is after spending $400+ on him last week for an exam and blood work, and having to give him insulin shots twice a day and feed him special food. I've spent more on him in the past two years than the whole rest of his life combined......
.........I love the mutt, but I'm not sure how much longer I can keep on doing this.
I once spent nearly a grand on a cat that I wasn't particularly attached to at the behest of my wife, who wasn't real fond of him either, but insisted that it was the right thing to do because he was a rescue. He showed his appreciation by shredding everything upholstered in my house, including the seat on my motorcycle and a vintage family heirloom quilt.
He wound up at the SPCA after nearly causing a gas explosion in my house wile my then pregnant wife was taking a nap. Never again for a cat, never.
Our cats are part of our family. We spend about $3K resolving a bladder stone issue with one of the cats a couple years ago. It sucked to spend that much, but it was never a question.
For us, as long as we can reasonably afford it, and there is a high probability of the treatment being a success, we will do it.
I honestly like our cats more than most humans. I will be a mess if something happens to them. Obviously, i am very attached to those fur balls.
John Brown - You might want to give your dog some Arnica Montana pills - very cheap, available at any good health food store. It'll kick up the healing factor about 3:1 without any side effects. Works good on humans too (duh) and is a real aid dealing with any physical trauma, bruising or invasive surgery recovery...
