No, really, that's what I said when my wife asked. The old DW was here when we bought the place in 2010, and it was on its last legs back then. Anyway, $850 for a Bosch machine + $129 install + $40 install kit + $30 to haul the old one away, which I figure is the express path to happy wife.

only it's not, because install guy showed up with machine on 3/7 and said "gate valve is frozen, no can fix." So, refund on install and haul away, and now it's a DIY. Old valves:

A friend of AK1 was in town for a couple days and asked if she could help. Sure, I like having help! So I showed her how to cut, deburr, clean, flux, and sweat copper fittings:

and they came out great, 100% leak-free!

Yes, we sweated all that copper together and then spliced it in with shark bites. I didn't trust my ability to sweat upside down.

of course, with the old DW out I could see why we have had kitchen sink drain problems:

Drain line rose 2-1/2" in a 36" run! So "while I'm in there" happened. New hotness:

I was only able to achieve 1 degree downslope, and the step adapter is a local low spot, but it is all leak-free and is a significant improvement over previous config.

with all that done, it was time to unpack the new DW and ... berkeley my mouth, the handle and door are damaged!

called Bosch, they gave me a list of local repairmen and said "show them your receipt and we will cover the repair 100%." Fair enough. So I finished the install:

I just finished stowing tools and discarding packing materials. I even submitted the warranty card. result: happy wife!

now I can get back to the garage!

Nice job.  We love our Bosch, pricey but it's a nice unit.  I installed ours after our kitchen remodel.

The first time they had a $59 install - came home from work and it was all taken care of.

I'm convinced there's so much crap under the sink we shouldn't store stuff there.

Also we bought the Weathertech under counter mat. Pricey? Yes but it's only money.

My daughter has a friend who always wants to see what I'm working on; I welcome that from ANYONE who wants to learn something new.

I bought the install as well.  DW arrived: "Nope.  The counter sits on top of the DW. Can't install. You need a stainless steel DW."  Great.  Returned DW to Sears (says how long ago this was...). Procrastinated for some length of time before finally buying another DW.  Bought 4 90 deg angle brackets to support the counter top.  Installed the DW myself. Put the old one to the curb - scrappers took it in less than a day.

Fyi you have an "S" trap. When you dump larger volumes of water down the sink it may suck the trap dry and you will get sewer gas coming back up. "S" traps are not code legal. You should change that PVC elbow to a san-tee with an AAV on top. Like this-

I would also replace that horizontal section with 2" and make sure to use pipe hangers along the way.

That's good info, thanks! The under-sink configuration didn't change other than to  make the uphill run into a (barely) downhill run. If I get sewer smell in the kitchen, I'll do what you posted.

The AAV I think will solve an issue that might show up. There is a spec for drain diameter depending on how far it runs from a vent stack.  I can't tell if you are over the distance limit with your diameter but it is worth looking in to.

If memory serves, trap arm length for 1.5" pipe is 42". 2" pipe is something like 5ft.

Yep, it's something very close to that. If I have issues I will update the config, as I just copied the way it was. House was built in 1979. I assume this config meets 1979 code.

Plumbing is always a PITA. Copper joints look better than what came out, and I like your use of sharkbite there.
