Farking bastidges wouldn't let me take shop, it was enforced home ec for a year until I was able to escape its clutches. What a complete waste of time that was. I have no intention whatsoever of making jello salads with fruit and marshmallows or EVER sewing sleeves onto a dress.

When I was fixing airplanes, one of the bush airlines we dealt with had a girl there who was a damn good mechanic. She had a Mustang (car) that she had restored as well.

Could that have been you Lesley?

I wish. I learned the basics in my early thirties - brakes, shocks, tuneups that kind of thing. Graduated to wheel bearings and that kind of stuff, but to be honest, I have great mechanic and I'd rather pay him to do it than have me berkley it up.

Agreed. Take it one step further, basic auto survival skills should be part of drivers' ed*, and that part (not the driving part) should be peer-taught, by the seniors in the regular AVTS curriculum with adult instructor supervision...

*which unfortunately is being axed from many schools' budgets. Imagine, so much of the economy is automotive/transportation related and this isn't deemed worth teaching.

Accident avoidance and car control should also be compulsory, long before new drivers are turned loose upon the roadways.

Dude. Duuuuuuuuuude.

I need to find a shock absorber...

If you haven't smash a window or two, you have no idea what you've missed.

Didn't Maggie on "Northern Exposure" fit that description?

Nope, already had Mrs 'Maro on board.

What's "Northern Exposure"?

It was a show about a moose, or something.

In reply to Appleseed:

I have. I'm still removing little pieces of glass a year later. This is in a car with no interior left at all (LeMons). I'll take the knife on a string.

Northern Exposure was a fish-out-of-water comedy about "the cultural clash between a transplanted New York doctor and the townspeople of fictional Cicely, Alaska"

The character Maggie was a fiercely independent bush pilot. She was played by actress Janine Turner.

Hey, I took homec, actually it was a BOCES class called restaraunt something. I was the only guy in the class with a bunch of low self-esteem hormonal girls. I don't remember passing.

Teach the chilluns how to properly remove the windshield on one swell foop, sell it on ebay and buy the class pizza.

They learn two things that day.

Northern Exposure was a funny show. Wife and I got caught up in it a year or two back when A&E was rerunning it at 3AM or somesuch. Tivo decided we'd like it, so we tried it, it was good.

I WISH my high school had had a shop class. You had to go off to the vocational school to take any of that, and I don't even know if that was something that could be done by kids that weren't on the "remedial track."

Youth wasted on the young, etc.- if I could go back, high school would be way different.

Oh yes. Although I seriously doubt my grades would be any better.

Who uses a tire iron to remove a window? You wrap a chain around your hand and smash it right thru. Its dramatic and impresses the hell out of the other 14yr olds in the shop not man enough to try it. Later you impress them more by having cigarette races on your forearm.
