Oh yeah, I think mine had a stuck thermostat. It would not generate heat on a long downhill. Also, I replaced multiple halfshafts - all four are the same. So maybe it wasn't so reliable - although I did have a Land Rover in the fleet at the same time so it's al relative.
People who own them love them. I've heard the engineering of early Subarus to be closer to tractors than cars too.

A lot of people do EJ22 swaps on the earlier Subies. Given how lightweight these are compared to the later Subarus which came with EJ22s from the factory, I think it would be a dramatic bump in power. Pick of the bunch would be a '95 EJ22- non interference, roller rockers and HLA's so you don't have to dick around with valve clearances.
