Would you want something like a Python script you could run that would send an alert when certain keywords are posted? That wouldn't be too tough to put together.

we've got it... although, today being what it is... some more of it might get through for a little while.
also, the mods have been clearing out a "secondary attack vector" a bit more proactively, over the last 24hours... and that might be spurring them to hit us more, and see if they can get stuff locked in on the secondary.
edit:
I suspect that shipping won't be necessary... and that we'll probably be dealing with these attacks until a little after the WorldCup has concluded?
Is there something about this site in particular that makes it easy for spammers? I do not see that kind of volume attack on other forums I belong to.
In reply to bearmtnmartin (Forum Supporter) :
I think it's a balance of getting new users and preventing spam. I think Tom has said that they error on the new user side. I know a forum that is dying because new admins made it so hard for spammers that new users have issues signing up.
How many forums are connected to Publications?
I think Tom's voiced the explanation in the past; but it amounts to the Tom, et al, find benefit in reducing the barrier to entry, and also making it easy to post. Rather than raise hurdles to doing these things, they rather have a really heavy, but easily finessed (most of the time) hammer to swing around at the requisite accounts.
As with any code, there'll be pieces of it that adversarial people with large monetary incentive will probe, and figure out how to take advantage of.
In order for this whole system to work, GRM needs Mods who are good at communication to interact with users that might not be following Margie's rules. It needs other mods/staff "around" to hammer the spammers when they crop up. And sometimes, it needs people good with pattern recognition, some free time on their hands, and a certain history with Digital Gardening, to prune what's slipped through the slats in the digital fences.
One challenge with automating reports is, doing that will complicate the existing mechanism... and it may lead to confusion about who's seen the report and needs to act on it. Whereas, with the Report Thread, we know, staff knows... and y'all know, too. We have as much incentive as y'all to get this stuff cleared out. And, there's often value in having people be the one to "drop the hammer"... rather than relying entirely on code to do the work. It's not a perfect system; after all... as I was taught growing up... none of us are perfect. Hopefully, though, we'll find a certain balance, harmony, and beauty in the end.
Or, maybe this Buffalo has just been eating too much clover again, and gotten over-pensive?
I assume the accounts are all created programmatically. Could you just calc the time from account generation to first post and nuke all that are too fast to be human and that include a URL? Or at least pass the URLs to VirusTotal (for free) to see if they've been reported and to find out how old the domain is and drop if previously reported or domain is new and has no reputation?
It seemed that down voting a post enough makes it invisible ,
is that what we as readers should do to black out the spam posts ?
