Duuuude, you are in my mind. I have been thinking the same thing. I was thinking 30 to 50 lap heat races. But your average, Joe Dirt, Earnhardt fan will cry bloody murder over it. Almost like the Budweiser Shootout or Allstar race.

F1 is the same. Good beginning, nap time for the second third, then good again at the end.

they do that in the All Star race.. well, i don't know what the exact format is this year, but they do "heat race" type stuff.. it's cool and all, but i like the endurance race aspect of the 500 milers.. all the stuff in the middle "boring" part is what sets up the exciting finishes, and races can be won or lost based on the stupidest things- like a lug nut falling off and adding .3 seconds to a yellow flag pit stop...

What does it say when racing enthusiasts are not the target audience for racing?

Because we remember what happened to Group B.

my answer is to open up the engine rules, but make them run on a 235/60/15 street tire with a 300 tread wear rating and take all the wings and other aero stuff off..

So you want F1 to become NASCAR?

I would absolutely not be interested in that.

Honestly it is more that on the weekends I am either working on cars, watching Newcastle United, playing soccer or ultimate Frisbee or hanging out with friends and now autocrossing. Also I have no Speed channel or Velocity.

In reply to Keith:

The flip side of the manufacturer's private war vs big money sponsorship is what that did for NASCAR. The '60s gave us the Chevy mystery motor, Chrysler Hemi, Ford's 427 Side Oiler, Cammer, and the Boss 429, the truck arm suspension, crazy aero kits, etc.

Then things shifted, and in the 1980s and early 1990s both the NASCAR cars and their roadgoing Detroit counterparts were still using V8 designs that were 1960s designs with minor updates. One has to wonder what motor would have been in Fox body Mustangs and third generation Camaros if NASCAR had still been a battleground for OEM development.
