I had a look at the interview that's being cited in the link above - it doesn't come as a massive surprise. A pity if the race has to be held abroad but at least I don't think the future of the 24h race is in jeopardy.
It's amazing that the people who seem to be leasing the ring from the local government can screw up on thing after the next and still continue until the thing's run into the ground. Actually it shouldn't surprise me, for some reason these contracts tend to lack clauses that would allow either party to terminate the contract.

That's not what happened here at all Joey. They leased out the track to someone who convinced them that the Nurburgring needed a mall and a theme park and lots of hotels, and that it would make millions. The politicians and whoever leased it certainly did not know their target audience. Or, as is becoming more and more the case, they know EXACTLY how much that land is worth to developers, and they're using Gov't funds to make it cheap to develop into something else.

The most charitable explanation would be that both the politicians and the developers were at fault.
