I watched one movie at a theater in 2012 and it was the Hobbit. I thought it was ok as far as entertainment value. I read the book somewhere in the early 80's, so the details of what was true to the book and what wasn't were lost on me. I do feel a bit ripped off that this was stretched out into 2 or 3 movies.

After reading the four books I got the impression that Tolkien wrote The Hobbit as a children's book. Maybe with his son as the target audience?
The folks at jezebel (gawker) seem to agree with Ruth Davis Konigsberg's claim that, "he was writing for his dude friends — C.S. Lewis, W.H. Auden, and Christopher Isherwood. "
In any case, taking the same screen time to cover The Hobbit and the LOTR seems ludicrous (and greedy) on the face of it.
I suppose I'll have to watch them eventually, but I'll wait for the DVD's, as well. I don't go to theaters to watch movies, anyway.
I rarely do, either.
Want to see the Hobbit, to the point and well done as a children's story like Tolkien intended? 1:17min run time.
1977 Animated Special: The Hobbit
This was my first introduction to JRRT when I was 10yrs old and the reason I read the rest.

I saw the 2D version and I liked it.
