Right now, if you're in the pool business, business is good. backyard pools that were 150 are now 500. pumps that were 50, are now 180. I bought a 12 x 36 pool back in April, with a 300gph pump.
Cue cleaning the filter daily. Seriously. I have one of the smallest pools intex makes, and this thing is still too small. 1/10.
This was a 10$ upgrade on FB marketplace back in April. Now, those go for over 100. Mine was old when I bought it, and gave me 3-4 months of use. The motor didnt quit working, but something in the pump gave up so no pumps. when it worked, and the chlorine levels were good, I could get over a week between cleaning. 6/10.
After that pump died, ive been watching facebook for a couple of weeks. the pool turned green and gross, so I drained it until a pump could be sourced.
Fiter problems be damned, we're in business boys! this 1hp unit was for the price of free. Guy wanted it out of his garage, and I wanted it on my pool. He even delivered it. Now, when I hooked this up I knew it was going to be overkill. but overkill is better than underkill, and free is better than anything. Or is it...

I need to figure out if I can put a regulator on the out. My kids are gonna be pressed up the wall of the pool the entire time :D
If you can't make it work, I'd put it up for sale. Buy the one you need with the returns.
Can you attach an elbow the the outlet? It would turn your pool into a whirlpool (literally) lol
Looks like you have a good headstart on building a homemade jet boat with that thing.
Make a bypass to go from the outlet line of the pump (or filter) back to the inlet side of the pump with a valve in the bypass line.
That should be allow you to reduce the flow back into the pool and still keep the pump operating properly.
In reply to No Time :
That's a great idea. I know restricting the flow wouldn't be ideal. Thanks for the suggestion.
I honestly don't see a problem I think No Time's idea is the best and if I was in your shoes I'd do that. Though that pump could make a pretty good whirlpool though with an elbow installed. If there weren't a few thousand miles between us I'd trade my 3/4 hp pool pump for yours. Mine turns green within 2-3 days due to the backyard facing south and it being 90+ here for 3 months straight.

Nice!
I got the 10'x36" pool, myself! And yeah the output on it drops dramatically after just a few hours of filtering. I was considering upgrading pumps back in the spring because I bought an outdoor propane water heater to warm it up but that 300 just trickled the water through it. The heater I got would handle 1.6 gpm but the Intex pump does maybe half of that so it took forever to warm it. It's good to know that I don't need to go all the way to 1hp in order to make progress.
Good idea on the diverting, too! Oh, what about a water feature for your pool? You could always run a fountain in it or if you make a water slide you can have it constantly wetted.
