Lately, I've been thinking about starting a blog or maybe starting to do some freelance work submitting articles to blogs, eventually working my way up to a big blog or magazine. I've been interested in writing for a while, and I have a real knack for the details. All that said... I really have no idea how to go about getting into this field. I went to college and graduated with a BA in History, but other than writing many 20+ page dissertations on historical figures and events, I have no real experience. And besides... who wants to read that stuff?

I have many interests, but was thinking of focusing on music (mainly metal music) and/or automotive subjects, and I'm leaning toward the automotive side of things. Other than posting on message boards related to the subjects, I haven't been able to really find a venue to write about these things. I know that there's at least one extremely local-to-me automotive blog that I read that I would really like to get in with, but I have no idea where to start. I know it can't be as easy as emailing the guy who runs the blog and getting in there.

So... any ideas where to start? One idea I've had is to post about the build of my Shelby CSX. I have been active on it since 2010, so I can come up with a good amount of lead-in material for posting.

Any suggestions?

And thanks for reading this mess of thoughts I'm having.

I believe that's an industry where you just have to start doing it...

I recently read an article by Tucker Max (remember him?) talking about life advice... One of the points he made is that people constantly tell him, "I want to be a writer!" "So, what's stopping you?"

The big thing I've seen is just to put down good, consistent work, and your audience will grow. Don't expect to have 1 million readers tomorrow and you should be set.

All of the overnight successes took 5 or 6 years to become an overnight success.

Sites like thetruthaboutcars.com and curbsideclassic.com will accept user submissions. Might be a good way to get your name out there and build your brand.

As long as you answer the question of "Who Cares" before you write each piece you'll find an audience.

I ghost blog on 15 or so sites. All automotive.

You'll need to log in to post.
