It's arduino based and the article said he's even made the code open source, looks like it would be pretty simple to DIY from that point (Arduino's are pretty simple to learn)
I saw that on Colossal the other day. It's cool, but not $3400 worth of cool. Building one sounds like a good option but it would drive my dogs crazy. They can't stand thunder.

Wouldn't work for me, animal-wise, but for a different reason...
My cat will sit in a window during a storm, trying to attack and kill lightning.
Plus, it kinda looks like dismembered sheep hanging from the ceiling, which tends to raise suspicions in some neighborhoods.
