Like to see Flash Gordon disappear without effecting the base color. Possible?
I doubt it. Looks to be airbrushed so maybe you could polish it out, but I bet not without damaging the paint.
I vote changing the A to a E and letting it ride.
Or paint that panel black.
Two tone, like paint everything above that body line to be white, to match the roof.
However, on the rear-most, side door, it looks like the mural dips down below the body line. That could be a tricky fix.

You beat me to it.
There's a 70's movie by that name. (wiki link, SFW, I would think)
I think you can sand it off, but absolutely need to re-coat the clear afterward. Stop sanding as soon as you get base color on the paper, and never coarser than 600 grit. This will be time consuming if the clear coat is heavy.
I see the problem... that mural is too small. Just keep airbrushing until maximum awesomeness is achieved.
I like 70's mural vans, but that isn't a good one. Wet sand and hope. Go to a couple of good body shops / custom painters and see what they think.
Plan B. Paint a better mural over it.

We showed that at our school theater. (Hey, we had to finish each quarter in the black so, you know, sometimes we had to cater to all kinds.)

Flesh Gordon? One of my faves. Saw it in the drive on theater in Melville sometime around 1977.
I still salute and say ,"Yes, your as**oliness" from time to time.
Yep. Our weekly schedule spanned the full range, from family-friendly features during the week to midnight movies on the weekend.
Adding sidepipes will improve the van.
I would replace the mural with an even worse one so I can't say much on that part.
