So, at my niece's birthday party this weekend I was talking to Mom about Pepto BeastMode
I realized that I didn't know if my aunt had a title for it. Called up today and had a nice little chat with her and her son-in-law. They're gonna look around for a title and see what they can find, I told 'em I'd start my search on my end. She did mention that she knows an abandoned car title can be done in Alabama. I would think that if we went that route it would be easiest if I got the title clear and in my name in Alabama in order to not have issues in Florida when I bring it down.
If anyone has any relevant info, I'd like to hear it.

Florida has tightened up abandoned vehicle rules in the last couple years. I couldn't get a title for that E39 wagon you saw on the lift no matter what I tried. A few years ago it was easy but took about 6 weeks.
If it was ever titled in 'bama and there is family there it should be easier than Florida.
If family can't help get an Alabama title, I'll be glad to do what I can. I have not tagged anything old since I've been here, but a bill of sale is all I'd need here near Dothan, for a 61. When ya go on the east side of the circle, your about 15 miles from my place. As you get 10 miles up 231, just before Ozark, only 6.
If it's ever been tagged in AL, it was not issued a AL title. But if the bill of sale has that persons name on it, and two witnesses, we got it made.
Or you can use my address, in your name. Didn't used to look at D. L. ; might now.
Why don't you drive your Aunt to the DMV and have a new title printed out,pay for it. Then have her sign it and take her to a fancy lunch or dinner. Problem solved.

Cause I work during the week, don't really have any more vacation time this year, and the DMV isn't open on the weekends?
I'd love to, but also her daughters are up there, and her son-in-law is as well. It would be nice to get it signed over to me right then and there but I realistically don't see it happening.
I might be able to take some time for Turkey Day and get up there, but I don't know.
I just read the other thread. What a cool truck!!
If she can't find the paperwork, she can apply for a replacement title either at the local DMV or online: https://www.revenue.alabama.gov/division/motor-vehicle/ If she's not computer savvy, you can probably fill out the online application for her from your end.
Let me know what you find out. I'm still trying to make heads or tails out of how FL registration and titling work. I live in GA (near AL border) and also have an investment property in FL. I want to register a car or two there, as FL has no emissions inspections. I can't figure out what I need to do that. I also would like to obtain a title for my '86 MR2 race car, which currently doesn't have one. Not sure how to do it.

You dont need much. Bring your Georgia title to the Florida DMV, along with the car and they will issue you a Florida title.
If you cannot bring the car so that they check the VIN, you can print the form, posted online, and bring that along with the form to your local Sheriff's office and have them verify the VIN and sign the document.
I assume you have a utility bill for your Florida property? You might be asked for that given that you probably do not have a Florida drivers license.
Google "Vermont title loophole."

Out of nothing more than curiosity, can a non-FL resident register a car in FL? Is the bar that the non-FL resident be a property owner in FL? Could the non-FL resident then keep the FL registered car at their non-FL residence year-round (or mostly year-round)?

Does Dallas do inspections?
Not all of GA does. I thought it was just ATL metro.
Also...
What year AW11? If it's an '84 or '85, you don't need a title. The registration counts as the title in GA for cars before 1986.

I know quite a few snowbirds that have cars registered here, a property but are not full time residents or have a Fl driver's license. So yes, you can keep a car here ... keep in mind the insurance rates will be Florida's rates.

That's good to know. Thanks!
Yes, I have utility bills and mortgage bills showing the Florida address. I wasn't sure if I had to get a FL drivers' license to title and register a car there.
SV reX, I live in Paulding County. Unfortunately we do have emissions inspection here. berkeleying sucks. I'm struggling to get my Boxster to reset the EVAP and SAI systems, so I can't get it inspected. The quandry of it is that the temporary registration is now expired...yet I need to drive the car to get the computer into ready mode.
I actually need to look at the VIN on the MR2 and see what year it is. It's a Lemons car with no title, so frankly I'm not even sure what year.

Because, if I remember correctly, AL does not issue a title for a vehicle that old.
In AL, ya only need a bill of sale, and proof of insurance to tag it older than a certain date. 1985, maybe?
I've haven't owned anything old enough since moving here, that I did not already have a title from a former state (or commonwealth) , so I have not actually been through the process.
No clue what AL does for an older vehicle known to be being sold out of state.
If Mr. A wants me to, I could look into it for him. I'm sure it will not be much hassle at all.

Very highly illegal to avoid emissions that way. There are definitely folks that do so. But some law officers get very uptight about a car tagged in a different state than your license. By law, if you move, you have 30 days to change one or the other, so they both match.
Just food for thought.

May be another "unachievable," but I bought a non-titled older vehicle in GA, and with current GA registration was able to title it in my name in Michigan when i moved. Active registration with sellers name may be as good as gold - even though it requires insuring a vehicle as well as paying the state.
I would love to see that suburban end up with Mr. Asa, even if it's so I can be in line for it down the road :)
In reply to classicJackets (FS) :
When I first started traveling contracts in the late '90s, my travelin' partner drove a 63 2wd suburban. Chevy Hugger Orange. That's a LOT of orange. He had a GMC front end - that was one cool azz truck to cruse in.
I want to see this back on the road, 'cause it deserves to be!
If he doesn't have anyone in the family to put current tags on it, I would do it, and start the paper trail to "sell" it to him in FL. If it was last tagged in AL, I don't even need the truck with me. Just the VIN. And I can get that run ahead of time, to see what comes of that.

If you could look into any of it I'd appreciate it, but please don't go to any trouble about it.
In reply to Mr_Asa :
I had another "interested customer" contact me privately, but as he's in no hurry, we'll see how long it takes me to find out facts, and not just "I heard"
No trouble at all, and I REALLY want to see this on the road again!
