Thinning out the armadillo population on the golf course.
They are starting again to dig a lot of holes all over. They are almost totally blind but man can they hear.

.22 between the eyes on the one above. Usually .22 wherever you can get them as they are scurrying for the woods.
Isn't the point of golf to hit it in the hole though? They're attempting to help players perform better.

My research on my vacation to Alabama last year confirms their poor eyesight.
Apparently, they cannot hear traffic, however.
The vehicles, not the band.
I'll be dipped if they aren't about the strangest critters...
I had to consult the wiki to find that they are mammals.
"Turtle-rabbit" to the Aztecs. Fascinating.
For nearly 10 years now I've lived just 40ft off the 18th fairway of a private country club. I've learned that the sounds of light ammunition at about the crack of dawn (first light) is a good thing and keeps down the skunk population and similar.
I've never witnessed it myself but I think the crew shoots from moving golf cart/maint vehicles.
Our place in Florida has them. Last year while remodeling the deck, apparently I gave them a convenient spot to burough under the house slab. Damn thing dug a 20' deep hole in one night. Also, it was the time when they give birth and they have 4 identical offs-ring every time! After finding out that they carry leprosy, we trapped and dispatched the 4 babies then took care of the adult. NOT EASY! Those things are 100% muscle and put up one hell of a fight! No gunfire in the development, so a sharpened piece of rebar was used. I'll just say that we won.
I'm not good enough to shoot while moving. That would be tough no matter what happens in the old westerns. It's hard enough holding a spot light & the pistol at the same time. Yes the leprosy possibility is also another reason to get rid of them.
Figured out that if you scare them or shoot a stream of water from a hose they'll jump straight up, about 2-3 feet. Probably why they get hit by cars.
Had some under our deck a few years ago and wife squirted them with the water hose, they jumped straight up. She wouldn't let me use my .22 pistol on them, made me get the pellet rifle which I told her was worthless on them but she wouldn't believe me so I shot one with a pellet and it bounced off, naturally. See I told you, but by then they were gone. Neighbor got them with a .22 rifle.
Yes when I miss one they jump straight up. In South America they make boots & purses. Can't imagine touching one to skin it.
No that one was scurrying right towards me. When they get scared they head for the trees no matter what is in their way.
