GRM was the first ever website I went to on the internet. I had read in the magazine about the forum. It was an article about what car to buy for 5k, 10k and 15k and at the end it had something like thoughts from the peanut gallery and the picture was a LMP1 Audi with a big V8 sticking out of the back of it and I believe a picture of Tuna55 at the wheel. That intrigued me, I didn't own a computer but my girlfriend (now wife) did. So the first website I ever saw was GRM. It was my first experience with a forum as well.
After several years of lurking, One of the first posts I made was meant to be in jest. Per had written an article about trying to steer people into a proper car for auto crossing. In his article he picked a Pontiac Grand Prix as an example of a car he suggested not using. I chuckled at that because I was auto crossing a GP at the time. So I wrote up a post using a lot of caps and exclamation points, and in my head it was hilarious. I didn't use any smilies though and I was tarred and feathered for two pages for my perceived attack on Per. In my mind it's still hilarious.
I have gotten more angry than I should about something someone posted and have said some things I shouldn't. I have called people names on here and I like to pick on Canadians. But I'm trying to get better about that. But in all honesty this is the only place on the net that I go to. It's by and large my only source for information. And really my only source of contact with people that are as completely obsessed with cars as I am.
For all it's good and bad points I love this forum. The amount of information and advice is almost overwhelming. And that wouldn't be the case without everyone who is here sharing there knowledge and experience. I have seen a lot of people come and go, some flamed out, some kicked out. But even those people added to the site.
We do seem to be missing a little bit of the diversity we had a couple years ago though IMO.
I visit daily, rarely post, haven't done a build yet. I have seen some people that should probably be on decaf, but this is one of the few places where people actually discuss and disagree, with respect, a variety of different subjects. We can disagree but at least show respect and don't act like 3rd graders when someone has a different viewpoint. As for grammar, I can spell fine, I just have difficulty with where to place a comma.,

Unfortunately I have the same feeling pretty much once a year. Between people getting stressed out about the change in weather, things going on in their lives, etc. the attitude around here seems to change. Or at least my interpretation of the emotion that is being expressed through the words written here changes.
I had as my signature for quite a while last winter, "Its going to be a long winter...." because of the bickering and in-fighting that had been going on. It was frustrating, like watching your family fight over something stupid, but you can't do anything because you're just a kid. Especially when the entire room is full of sarcastic and cynical people, eventually riffing jokes can lead to hitting a bulls-eye and sinking someone's emotional battleship.
So I can understand the feeling and I've backed away myself a few times. I'm sure some of you are relieved when I go away (no, really don't blow smoke up my ass, I'm not that kinda guy) and I suspect it may be time to kick back a bit more and go work in the garage instead of hanging out here. This is still a great place to hang out and I hope to eventually meet more of you fine folks in person, but too much of a good thing can sour you on it and I don't want that to happen to me.

I've met n' gret quite a few GRMers. I've sold cars to some, bought parts from others, traded books, given away garage door openers, swapped beer for engines and engines for beer. This is a good place to be.

Nah, Margie deals with "people" like GPS all the time in their industry and she can handle herself.

Disagreeing with you, too. I've been around since 2009, still not a half-dork, and the only negative 'newbie' encounters I've had, I've fed into a bit myself and they've been quickly resolved.
Have fun trying to find a more helpful, more welcoming auto-board. They don't exist, IME.

But moreso this. The knowledge and sense of community here is overwhelming. I consider myself a carnerd's carnerd, and I get schooled almost daily here. It's fantastic.
This is a good place to be, as for diversity I have a 91 Corvette Roadster autocross car, a 1970 Datsun 510 Road Race car and a 1991 Nissan 300zx TT street car. I visit this web site daily but rarely post.
I allways think before I post am I going to get barated about my spelling? or maybe poor sentence or paragraph structure so a lot of the time I don't bother commenting.
It has been about 40 years since I have been in a classroom and the work I do has very little writing involved. Not a excuse but us old guys sometimes get rusty and who wants to have to think that hard about posting on a recreational web site. We are here because we love cars. If it gets to the point where we have to be as good as the Magazine writers that for me is not any fun.
I hope this dose not hurt any ones head but it is the best I can do. Thanks for your time.

I was a long-time member on the HAMB, from when the membership was only a few hundred people.
I finally got tired of the garbage over there about three years ago.

I often come off as snarky, and I know it. Sarcasm (my second language) often doesn't translate well on the printed page. Those who have been around long enough just know that my tongue is usually poking the inside of my cheek as I type. However, there is so much garbage on internet forums (many of them that I read regularly) that I know I expect this place to be held to a slightly higher standard. It generally is, too. It's one of the few Must Read sites I visit daily. I don't get all nuts over spelling or punctuation (though 'breaks' and 'brakes' is like fingernails on a chalk board) but at a certain point if you can't write sentences better than a junior high schooler using text-speak don't expect people here to treat you as an intelligent human being. Too many of us deal with the dumbing down of society in our jobs to have much tolerance for it here.
Best thing about this family? No matter how stupid your car choice, someone will think it's cool and engage you in conversation about it. Even Saabs, which are truly pointless.

I came here daily, often post. More often refrain from blathering if I don't have anything useful to add. Overall though, this seems to be a really good place to be. (That came off sounding like a beery "I berking love you guys" moment, sigh)
This was actually the second forum I started frequenting. The first was a now defunct message board related to the car in avatar. As swear some of those trolls must have had "SEARCH NOOB, WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!" as a keyboard macro just so they could be the first to post it. This place is all warm and fuzzy by comparison, but it doesn't mean things can't be improved. I've also dropped out of the picture for a while over the years.
For me, the benchmark is when I start to care about what other people think of what I post or I'm taking comments about my posts personally. Realistically, even if they were meant to be personal attacks, who cares? If you are getting upset or worn down by stuff you're reading here, you probably do need a break. The internet has the ability to connect you to people you'd never otherwise "meet", both good people and harsh, unrepentant trolls. Its all in the ratio of the two. Personally, I think this place has a pretty good ratio, which is why I always come back.
I agree that we need to cut ckosacranoid a break for poor spelling when posting from his phone. In return, he should edit his posts to correct the spelling

This place rocks. We have our little spitting matches occasionally via political threads, but we're all good buds and 90% of us would gladly by anyone else here a beer in real life while laughing off the fact that we can't agree on who Charlie married or whatever.
