Panera now offers their own delivery service, touted to only cost you $1! I went to order online from them today to deliver it. Immediately I'm met with a disclaimer that menu items for delivery will cost more. Then there's a "convenience" charge in addition to the $1 delivery charge, as well as a built in tip that you can't adjust either up or down. So a salad that would've been $10 or less if I picked it up would be at least $18 delivered.
But hey, the delivery charge is only $1!

Having a kid driving around in an unreliable 1975 Maverick delivering your pizza doesn't come free.
More people ordering delivery means the restaurant can cut back on square footage and get rid of staff and tables, which cost money.
I guess it balances out if you run your business properly.
Right. Witness Chick-fil-A.
It's very unlikely many of them will reopen their dining rooms. EVER.
They figured out they can make more money by focusing on drive-through.
Ours re-opened a few weeks ago. I couldn't believe it. They already trained us to go sit in the parking lot for the last 18 months and not have to clean the dining room.

They are independently operated. There is no corporate decision regarding this.
However, some may never reopen (like the one my daughter works at)

I've never heard any suggestion that Uber is building clone websites.
Link?
Simply go to the Uber page and look at the food offered. Every site I clicked on mirrored the restaurant's own - except for the pricing.
In reply to z31maniac :
It's not debunked. The Uber prices are not the same as the restaurant's prices and the sites look identical

The problem is that the consumer is unknowingly paying more. It is hidden in a fraudulent manner

But it's not fraud. Separate menus with different prices would be fraud.
Voila! And there are separate menus with different prices, but you are led to believe you are paying regular menu pricing
Plenty of industries have different prices for different customers and ways of buying, as well as time of purchase.
A bunch of it is distasteful, but I don't think it's fraudulent.
Restaurants often have early bird specials or cheaper lunch options, or a happy hour. Why can't you get those listed prices at 8pm Saturday Night?
I'm thinking the price you see on the app is the one you'll have to pay if you want to use the service.

True Dat, but here's the problem they tell you the delivery fee is only $X and then quietly tack on the other upcharge without mentioning it or giving you an easy comparison. Slight of hand worthy of a magic show
