I get bronchitis or pneumonia (or both) just about every year. The doc says my lungs are scarred, and therefore I am prone to both of them. I'm just getting over bronchitis right now, been down since wednesday night. Anyway, when I'm sick in the chest (as opposed to sick in the head) I will get some nasty, NASTY coughing fits. Last time I was sick I coughed hard enough that I passed out. Well, tonight at dinner I almost passed out again. This time, though, I felt sharp shooting pains that went from my waist to my shoulders, and at the back of my tongue as well. I did some reading and they say that's from the spike in blood pressure that comes from such a coughing fit. Well, I was just brushing my teeth and discovered that pretty much the whole left edge of my tongue is bruised, bad, and a good portion of the right side as well. HOLY super cough Batman! I popped blood vessels in my tongue from my cough!??! I absolutely did not bite my tongue during the coughing fit.
Has anyone heard of this before?
I didn't bother going to the doc, they only want to prescribe antibiotics and this is not a bacterial issue, it's a virus. So, I just drink tea with honey and take it easy.

You might try another doctor. A bronchial dilator might help with the coughing and open up your lunges to get rid of the crap.

My wife deals with it every year and that seems to help her a good bit.

If you BP is spiking enough to bust blood vessels in your tongue, that isn't something to play with. You definitely don't want to pop one somewhere important. Go see the Dr sooner, not too late.

Sounds like you need to find a new doctor, and go see them.

Oh, and my wife says it isn't uncommon. They can also pop in your eyes.

I think I'd be looking for a new doctor if he's blowing off a grown ass man passing out from coughing.

Yeah, as somebody with a hyperactive cough reflex myself, I'd get a second opinion too. Good luck, man.

I just realized, that has happened to me in the past.
Dang, gotta go to the doc.

It's just the small capillaries in the eye. They'll turn the whites of your eye red, but that's apparently all that happens in most instances.

I probably would, and I hate doctors with a passion. Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to call in the pros. BP spikes like that aren't something you want to take chances on.

Good luck with it and take care of yourself.

Find a new Dr ASAP. That sounds extra dangerous, and if the root problem in your lungs keeps causing repeat problems, the Doc should be helping you with a real management plan.

I'm with the rest of the guys. Get another opinion. I have allergies at this time of the year that trigger my asthma. It took me a few years to realize it wasn't a cold. Maybe yours could be allergy related? They can develop later in life. No matter what, please get that checked out by another doc.

1) +101 on getting a second, new medical opinion

2) My seasonal bronchitis and pneumonia bouts have gotten better as I have learned to keep my allergies under control. Do warm showers help your coughing fits? Try a humidifier for your bedroom for sleeping, and then look into getting prescription allergy meds once this settles down.

This. If it's every year I'm betting it's allergy related.

Passing out and sudden blood-pressure spikes are the equivalent of the little red Aladdin's lamp shining on your dashboard as you merge onto a freeway. Your family and friends don't need your dropping dead on the floor as your next symptom. Go see another doctor, maybe across the state so you aren't running into Doc #1's best friend.

I've had similar problems to yours. The inhalers and such help. I've just had to learn to deal with it. Don't put off going to a doctor when you start to feel sick; I ignored bronchitis once. Once. They can also give you stuff that will make your coughs more productive, so you don't have to cough as hard to remove the gunk.

Also, regular exercise helped my symptoms a lot.
