but do those data recorders actively tell Big Brother your location, direction of travel, and speed in real time? that's the next step, and it could tie in with the thread from a few days ago about self driving cars...
They tell nothing in real time... I havent seen where anyone is proposing real time transmission of that data...
The thread is about recorders...
What you are suggesting would require a massive amount of sattelite communications network bandwith, plus a rather large amount of data computing and storage.
I don't think that is going to happen on the scale you are suggesting.
this thread was about data recorders- 2 years ago... now it's revived and i linked to an NHTSA proposal to be able to track everyone in real time via mandatory hardware and software that the manufacturers would install in every new vehicle.

Hmm, only my focus is obd2......I'd love to do what wbjones mentioned though, but it would probably get you black listed somehow.
And this is exactly why I will never put one of those 'snap shots' on anything I drive. Period.
Oh yeah, I did hear about that.. Its because of the push for self driving cars. If you look at the article they are only pushing it out in limited range on radio waves.
That said, I guess insurance companies could make survalience posts if there is a unique RFID with each vehicle (think speed trap).
However, it might be a boon if you can readily show a log of your speed if you get pulled over (provided you werent actually going as fast as they claim)

yeah, that's way better than the outdated "innocent until proven guilty" method that we've been using up to this point to fight traffic tickets.

I have often wondered what one show of my driving. I do not accelerate or deccelerated hard.. but I also do not like to slow for corners.

though it may be painted under layers of prose and poetry, the core function of any capitalist enterprise is to screw you out of your money using whatever means are not prohibited by law. Up to an most certainly including changing the law as they see fit.
This is a great exapmle of the principle.
But...
There is an interesting development. Kids are buying into driving as much as they used to. Part of the reason, as explained by my daughter is that it is too much of a hastle what with all the graduated license test, fines, maintenance cost and crazy insurance cost.
It is quite interesting to see that the industry might just be pricing itself out of the market.
