We have a BJ's close to us, and a Sams a little farther out. We did the math and BJ's just didn't make sense. Sams made sense if we ONLY use it for gas, and use it for gas 90% of the time. We do use it for gas 98% of the time. We also save on prescription glasses and contacts. We don't get a lot of food there because we don't have a spare garage to keep 300 rolls of toilet paper and a spare freezer for meat. But we're working on the freezer....

I have Costco and sams memberships.
For general things like paper towels, Kleenex, buttwipe, I goto sams exclusively. Costco gets my money for products not loaded with garbage chemicals plus more gourmet items.

Certainly each has there own things and are bought accordingly. Neither is better than the other overall.

I'm pretty sure the one I frequented in Scottsdale had diesel at a couple of the pumps. The one in Lexington KY does not have diesel iirc.

Deep freeze in the garage is one of the best purchases I've ever made. Going to wait 1-2 years then sell/give away the current one and get a refrigerator-style deep freeze so it's easier to see/inventory what we have.

Our current one from Lowe's was under $200 delivered. That was a few months after the pandemic started.

Costco.  Why?

  • It's not walmart.  The employees get decent pay and benefits,
  • In my view, it's not cheap, but good quality products at fair prices.
  • Ten buck/pound strip steaks that are great after sous vide.
  • Five buck big rotisserie chickens.  (think Sams' is the same?)
  • It's not a Walton company
  • If you're a wine drinker, there's a good and constantly changing selection at good prices.
  • The pharmacy is cheap and good to work with
  • Ten buck BIG pizzas in the snack bar

I've belonged to both and there's not a huge diff.  Costco is a little more upscale.  And it's not a Walton company.

I keep big boxes of pho and ramen at work....A case of 24 was $11.

I buy them too as a base and then add bean sprouts, green onion, fresh squeezed lime, and a protein (usually 30-40 count shrimp) to send my taste buds straight to flava' town.

Look closely, there's a restaurant named Pho King

Pho King, 1945 N Campus Ave, Upland, CA, Eating places - MapQuest

I think adding "king" to the end of a business name is more of a Chinese custom than a Vietnamese custom but how about we just look the other way in the interest of humor.

How to correctly pronounce pho

We have premium memberships to Sam's and Costco.  No BJ's here.

I prefer Costco because it cleaner , the workers are nicer, and, like others have said, it's not Walton.  We buy most of our gas there.  The lines are worse in the afternoons later in the week.  No lines early or late any day.   It doesn't take all that long even if there is a line.  The gas station at Sam's located such that is blocks access to the store.

Interstate batteries are cheaper at Costco than the Duracells at Sam's.  A lot of people I know get their hearing aids at Costco.   Both places will run the 6qt Mobile 1 oil for $33 every other month or so.  I did use the Kirkland motor oil, but it was a much better deal when it first came out.  It is $33 for 2 five gallon jugs on sale.

Costco fan here. Only membership we have. Item quality is really good. Never used the pharma but do get my glasses from them at a huge savings. Not convenient to us to use regularly for gas but we do always fill up when there. Staff is nice and happy. I've really got nothing negative to say about the place.

Whenever someone considers getting a membership, check to see if there is a sale running. We got a year of Sam's for $20 because they were running a promotion. Between the gas and the $2.50 1/4 pizza slice combos it's more than payed for itself.
