My wife and I will be closing on our first home in the next few weeks and we will be in the market for a washer and dryer. The home has the ability to use a gas dryer and we have very affordable gas compared to a lot of the country. We prefer a top load washer and currently there are no energy star rebates in our area. We would like to keep the budget under a $1000 and are completely open to scratch and dent. What are the brands to look for and what are the ones to avoid?

Check craigslist. Last winter I picked up a Maytag Neptune washer and dryer for $100. Sellers wife had to have new stainless steel ones. Save the money for now. You will be amazed at how fast it goes when you get your first house.

Speed Queen. Get the one that is not the bottom of the line. The next one up, with the stainless tub. It is the same mechanically as the commercial units. A CL drier if you have to stay under budget, but that washer will make momma happy.

I love my Whirlpool Cabrio set. Top loader, HE, big enough to wash a king size down comforter with no trouble. I have seen them on Craigslist for under your budget.

Speed queen. These are industrial machines clothed in a consumer skin. Any laundromat you've been to is full of speed queen stuff. All metal construction, only the knobs to select modes are plastic. American made, last forever. Not terribly efficient, but they dont break.

Yes! Yes! Speed Queen makes appliances that act like appliances. They just work. Remember, these are designed to operate 10 hours a day in a laundry mat.
