Looks like old post are no longer editable on this board. It seems like, maybe after an hour, the edit button grays out.

Is this on purpose?  If so, what purpose?

I find editing (more than an hour) old posts it certainly useful, and really does not have much downside I can see.  I use it for the AC thread (which is VERY long) so I can keep current season info and installation info in the first and second post, thus very easy to find, but of course will need to be updated occasionally.

Also, being able to delete or modify mistaken, or inappropriate posts I am sure makes admin workloads lower.

Yeah it seems that there's a time limit now which could create some problems...I'm guessing in response to a real forum member's account recently being hacked and posting spam?

Yes, it's intentional, and a feature most other forums seem to have. Moderators can still edit older posts, but this should help prevent spam on old stuff.

In reply to Tom Suddard :

At some point maybe it would be less time consuming to approve new users instead of leaving the door wide open and then having to chase the un desirables around that the open door policy lets in?

This new policy with edits being limited will all but kill the Assetto Corsa Sim racing group on here. We will not be able to update the thread anymore keeping the first page updated with the current series and standings as each series progresses. It will most likely make sense to move it off GRM and go to discord.  But that will then result in the sim racing group thread sinking in to oblivion and not get eyes causing the group to die.

It is sad that the spammers have forced GRM to do this and ruined things.  It will be killing off something that has been on GRM for 15 years or so.

Oh. While I am thinking of things maybe you should implement a mandatory password change for everyone. This could be helpful.  I really should change mine. I don't remember the last time I changed it.

We have a discord.  Is arguably a much better platform for it.

I havent looked at the first page of the thread in probably over a year.

I am thinking more of the first page as advertising of the group and as such keeping it up to date so possible new people can see what we are doing.

For the record, I agree it is handy for build threads

However I'm old school and was part of a LOT of forums before the "edit post" feature existed at all.

Also was part of them when the few that had it, only had a few minute window.

And I very much remember the obligatory "posteriquote" second post in any idiotic thread.

We will have to figure out another way to promote the series. It was bound to happen I guess.

Mandatory password changes are actually considered harmful these days by many security experts.  They don't actually fix many real problems (closing a door that's been open for 6 months is better than never, yes, but it's still not really acceptable), and studies have shown that when people need to change them frequently it often results in people using weaker passwords to begin with.

I'm glad that our host keep this place going. The amount of times that I Google something obscure regarding BG chassis and it brings me here to a thread I participated in 6+ years ago is worth it's weight in gold.

Did not know this.  Hummmmm

Maybe a one time change for everyone?

Had an idea that may keep the spammers at bay without inconveniencing the rest of us, maybe the ability to edit old posts could be granted once a user reaches a certain post count? The only downside is that it wouldn't do anything for account hacks.

You'll need to log in to post.
