In the last week I've seen a Subaru Baja and an Explorer Sport Trac with camper shells, and it made me think "Why not just buy a Legacy Wagon/regular Explorer?". The only reason that I can come up with is for hauling dirty or smelly cargo. But both of these vehicles I saw were totally spotless, so I don't think that's the case. Any other ideas?
Why would you buy a 4 door pickup truck with a tonneau cover? If you would have continued to buy the rwd V8 Impala/Crown Vic/New Yorker you really wanted, they would still be making them.

It is much easier to remove a camper shell then a roof.
Well, not by that much... but come time to put it back on the difference is incredibly noticeable.
I used my pickup about eleventy billion more times without the camper than with it. It sucked. It made the entire butt end of that vehicle worthless.
The last time I had a pickup I had a camper shell for it. When I needed it, it was held on with four small C clamps. I would use it three or four times a year to haul stuff I didn't want to blow out or get wet. I could put it on or take it off in less than ten minutes. It's one of those things that isn't a necessity, but sure is nice to have when you need it. Then I sold the truck and bought a van.

It's a lot easier to hose the dog hair/food/slobber/pee out if you keep Fido in the back of your Baja with camper shell than if you keep him in the back of your Legacy.
There are lots of reasons to have a canopy and pickup, just depends on your needs. I'm more of a wagon/Suburban/van kind of guy myself, but some people love their pickup beds.

Security. When I haul cargo, I want to keep it locked up if I'll be making multiple trips. I also toss the bikes back there when we go ride trails, then we can stop to eat or whatever afterward.
Yes, a van may be more practical for much of what I use my truck for, but it's been in the family since new, and I really hate working on vans.
