So I just discovered "pumping". This opens up a whole new world.

Unfortunately, I haven't quite figured out how to do it just yet I honestly don't quite understand the physics of it , so I'm not sure what I can do gear-wise to make it easier on me body-wise (I know my current inability is at least 99% due to my form, hahaha).

Part of me is thinking that tighter trucks would make for more direct power transition to the road, kinda like stiffer springrate on a full-suspension mountain bike, but I'm wondering if loosening my trucks back up a bit might help me figure out that form better.

Any hints? EDIT: Huh, from wikipedia: Learning to pump is easiest with loose, tight-turning skateboard trucks Guess I'll be loosening those berkleyers up!

I think that practice should be the first priority, then work on the gear. Once you get the technique down, you'll be able to better judge any changes you make to the trucks or wheels.

For the record, I got my first board back in the 60's (hey, there's a reason I'm "oldsaw"). Steel wheels, bad bearings and poor surfaces couldn't stop a kid from having fun in hilly Connecticut. Gave it up until I was fininshing college while working in a retail store that carried boards and gear in the Sports dept.

I lived across the street from the campus and the roads and pathways were always well-maintained, very smooth and had virtually no vehicle traffic. Walking wasn't nearly as fun or fast when their was class to attend. Oh, there were some tennis courts right next to the campus entrance and they used a nice, sticky, glass-smooth and durable compound that made riding a joy - late at night as the racketeers didn't appreciate how their precious courts were getting used.

Heck, we even entertained the campus cops who would stop on their rounds, sit in their cars and watch for awhile. What else did they have to do at 3AM?

Yeah, I replaced my crappy Target board with a boardshop setup, but other than that I'm not looking to buy any more gear (other than maybe some wrist protection and a helmet) until stuff wears out. I'm assuming I'll eventually need to replace my wheels, and that that's a good time to replace bearings.

Just workin to get it all figger'd out, lol

Not true. It's during the time you take off to recover from the last injury you got while playing that you get old.

For anyone whose interest has been piqued by this, I found these couple pages:

1 mile commute by board?

The answer is longboard. Bigger wheels, smoother ride, more forgiving at high speed. If you dont want to buy one, you could probably cut one out of a plank of wood, use your existing trucks but add a little spacer, and stick bigger wheels on there. Maybe some from a roller skate. If you can find a roller skate. haha. Wont be the prettiest but I did that in middle school and it was still real fun to ride around on.

I 2nd having some sort of protective gear on, at the very least some wrist braces. Pretty easy to instinctively try to catch your fall when it inevitably happens.
