A Well Respected Man
The Kinks
This song was released in the autumn of 1965, my senior year in high school. The Kinks were a bit of an "edgy" British band and I was definitely in the minority liking their music ... better than the Beatles and the Beach Boys in my own teenage music opinion. Anyway, we were at our local pub tonight and Kim (filling in for Mary at the bar) had sixties music playing on Sirius XM. This song caught my ear and brought back memories from more than fifty years ago. Music and oldfactory senses tend to do that for me.

Kinks again, this one from around 1970. I was (and still am) a big fan of the Kinks music. This one was sort of ground-breaking for the time.

Dear Jerry
Start this marathon performance about nine minutes into the video. The prelude is all marketing. But this is a pretty good jam band that takes the Greatful Dead and Phish to the next level. Very good musicians (but I can only take about 30 minutes if this and then I want to rip my friggin' eyes out).

What we're listening to right now
Annie and I are listening to a variety of music right now, and this is is one small piece. This is Artie Shaw. He's a great jazz clarinet player and band leader from the thirties and forties. I love his music, thanks to my father's interest in music from that era.
The sound of a youtube video that my wife is watching and it's about photoshop tutorial.

Midnight In Paris
This is one of my favorite movies. I really like the movie and I like the music ... but only because Annie and I have been to Paris several times, and will be going back again in October. I think the prerequisite to liking the music and the movie is having a bit of knowledge if 20th century American history and having been to Paris. Really, I don't want to sound like a dick, because (in my opinion) I'm not. But the first time we ended up in Paris was because it was a part of a Viking River Cruise on the Seine to Normandy. I would never have thought I'd like Paris, but we both loved it. It was only for a couple days on that first trip, but we were hooked. The following year, we booked a full week in Paris with friends. And this October, we'll be spending one day there as part of our next Viking River cruise: one day in Paris, two days in a chateau in Tours in the the Loire Valley, and then an eight-day Viking river cruise in the Bordeaux region. (I'm looking into renting a classic Citroen 2CV for when we're in Tours). Do I like Bordeaux wine? Yes, indeed. And I repeat, I am not a dick ... just a happily retired guy who discovered something new that I like.

REM's Shiny Happy People on WLIR. I'm 54 years old, and thanks to this forum, I'm giggling like Beavis & Butthead. "They said shiny happy person! Huh huh, huh huh!"

Green Onions
Booker T and the MG's
I posted this Agee weeks ago, and I'm listening again. I loved this AM radio song in the sixties, and then it popped up in the soundtract of the movie American Grafitti ... the drag race between the yellow '32 five window coupe and the black '55 Chevy (driven by Harrison Ford).

Sonny Stitt
I'm a big fan of mid-twentieth century jazz, especially saxaphone. Sonny Stitt represents the "be-bop" genre of this era. Great artist, great music. In more contemporary terms, and locally to SoNE, Annie and I really like another great alto sax player, Greg Abate. We see him often, and his music is very similar to Sonny's. (We also get his mail often because we're in the same town and share a similar address, and due to that, we know him personally).

Greg Abate
Greg is a talented performer, a fantastic technical saxaphone artist, and lover of mid-twentieth century American jazz that he performs all over the U.S. as well as Europe. Since he lives in our town and we have a similar address, we get each other's mail often. Consequently, Annie and I have become friends with him. (Greg is also a fine-cigar aficionado. There's a good story about a serious cigar shipment that we received which I'll relate sometime).

So now for something completely different ... Phil is another RI musical artist, but now living in Nashville. Good music.

Artie Shaw - Frenesi
My father introduced me to the music of his era, which of course I hated at the time. But as I grew older, I grew wiser (at least in my opinion). And I began to appreciate his music. This was one of his favorites, and is now one of mine.
Incidentally, Artie (a.k.a. Arthur Jacob Arshawski) was a clarinet phenomenon as a teenager. At 27, he led his own band, toured nationally, produced great music, and had a number of best selling records, and was also an actor. Not bad. "Frenesi" was a top-ten song in 1940 or so.
