Next generation Wainwright, son Rufus: Hallelujah

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LQK4YfiPj1Q

Most people know this as the song from Shrek. But it was originally written and performed in the eighties by Canadian Leonard Cohen, which is my favorite version. It's sometimes called the Canadian national anthem. Rufus Wainwright "covered" the late John Cale's movie cover version of Leonard Cohen for the Shrek sound track. Follow that?

Annie had a tough day at work (even though she's retiring in a few months), so I picked up a bottle of Bordeaux and put Omar Akram on Pandora for her. Very relaxing "new age/ spa" style music. I think it helped.

One hour of some of the best rap/pop/rock mashup and remix ever created. This is the place where I get my "RXNC Trip in a Nutshell" music from. (Which, specifically, comes from the very end, with the lyrics for Break On Through laid over Misirlou, with some Pulp Fiction quotes for colour)

Darius Rucker: Wagon Wheel

Darius is a great performer. And the video production of this is pretty good. But it's a slick, contrived production of the real thing. I really love the precursors of this great song. See below.

Old Crow Medicine Show: Wagon Wheel

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4b8tJnRNvp8

OK, these grass roots guys are the real thing. They took over this song from Bob Dylan, rearranged it, added to it, and made it work ... long before Darius covered it. I actually saw these guys do this song at the Station Inn nightclub in Nashville when I was on a business trip about 15 years ago, before they were famous. Great show. It's all about the music!

(The effen Brits don't really seem to be getting with the Yanks' music, do they? Well eff the wankers ).

Counting Crowes - Mr. Jones

I had just gotten out of the service and was going to community college and working when this song came out. One of the guys I worked with was a retired Army veteran that grew up harder and poorer than I had lived, he enlisted the Army, married his lifelong sweetheart, raised 4 kids and put them through college, and was still working in his mid 60's when I met him. He was always very positive with a great outlook on life and this had a significant impact on me considering how much more adversity he had faced than I had. His name was Robert Jones, and every time I heard or still hear this song I think of him. He was a really good guy!

I love JB, but I'm currently listening to another vintage guy, maybe a bit mellower than JB:

Kris Kristofferson: Loving Her Was Easier, from a 1972 performance:

And same guy, same song, but 2010 at a concert in Spain:
