So, a few months ago I bought a 1991 Cherokee Sport. I had been looking for a 2 door, 5 speed XJ for awhile. This one has the AX15 5 speed and the Dana 35 rear with 3.07s (bleh). I bought it on a whim (who does that here? ) without really any idea on what I wanted it to become. I thought about swapping the 4x4 bits in but I'm kinda shying away from that now.
Now I implore you, my fellow GRMers (enablers), what should I do with it? It runs good, it just developed a weird RPM issue where it sounds like it gets loaded up and starts to die when idling. But other than that, it runs great for having 225k miles.
I followed the XJ-R build and I think it's completely awesome! I found a Chrysler 8.25 rear with 4.10s for $200 locally. I want to make this a dirt cheap build using junkyard parts.
Pics!
The stock shifter was berkeleyed, so I put a Hurst shifter in. Who puts a $200 shifter in a $1300 XJ? This guy BECAUSE RACEJEEP
I found it had a Borla catback when I threw it up on the lift. The cheap autostore tip has to go though...
RUST! The hatch floor is solid... up to the last 6 inches or so. The driver's side footwell is rusted through as well. Its right in the outside corner.
I also bought 15x8 Soft 8 wheels from Summit when they were on sale for $40 each. And an H4 headlight conversion because the stock sealed beams are terrible. Oh and I put a better gauge cluster in. No more MPH and GIANT fuel gauge.
It's already pretty fun to drive. Since its a stripper version with only A/C, it weighs right around 2900 lbs. The tired rear suspension suffers from terrible axle wrap when driven in anger. I need to replace the leaking extension housing seal and put some MT90 in the tranny, then it will be back on the road...
Ideas?
