My left knee is intermittently quite painful, stiff and snappy, and then kinda pretty ok. General consensus has a piece of cartilage folding over, although I haven't been to an actual Doctor. I do have physio and nursery types in the shop occasionally, though.
Scope? Work through it? Take a pill?
Learn me knees...
Probably going to get worse until surgery makes it better. Did this start suddenly or gradually get worse and worse?
Both my knees are crunchy and I will likely need to have them scoped due to arthritis, but I am putting that off as long as possible.
Swimming and road cycling are probably in your future
I had a busy Saturday about three weeks ago, dragging tree limbs out of a back yard. It felt a bit abused, but nothing severe. No tripping in gopher holes, no sudden ""Ouch". Following weekend super painful, snapping, really hard to bend it first time, then a few days of Naproxen and it's mostly back to just feeling abused.

Cycling is no problem. By swimming, you mean walking on the bottom of the pool while other people mysteriously float by, right?
Does that exersise wear stuff back into place, or is it low impact recovery after scoping it?
What do I do about knees? I'd go see a specialist, they can tell you if/when you need to be cut on. Sometimes a brace will help, at least defer being cut on. I've had bad knees for as long as I can remember. A specialist found out why. When I bend my knee the knee cap moves to the outside and pulls the ligaments on the inside. Left is worse. I can stick my finger between the bones in my left knee when I cross my leg. Doc said surgery won't fix the problem, only put it back together after I tear it up. Have a brace i wear when doing strenuous work. I guess this is part of the hyperextension joints I have.
I'd try stretches and exercises first. Tight calves and hamstrings cause me knee pain time to time, especially w/ the kind of work you did and w/ cooler weather. See a doc. Don't rush to a scope, try PT first if offered. I had torn meniscus and floating cartilage that locked my knee up dead, PT wasn't an option. Five years after scope, no problems. I will stretch at the least sign tho.
I tore my mcl and lcl in my right knee and they ended up scoping it and i wear a support brace. Recently ive been dealing with swellin and fluid in my left knee they think is a miniscus issue and the doctors order so far is too take an nsaid, ice when possible and avoid overworking it. So its really hard to say what way to go short of a specialist. They want too fix my left knee naturally if possible.
Until you know what's actually wrong, it's almost like having someone ask you "My car is making this funny noise. What do you think it is?" (and you don't get to hear the noise). You need to see a doctor. I've got all kinds of knee problems, but it may have no relevance to you.
I'm scheduled for a partial knee replacement in January, the bushing is shot and it's bone on bone on one side. We're car people, not knee guys, go see a doctor. At least get a correct diagnosis, then decide.
Knees are connected to your hip and ankles. Ignoring problems in one area can cause damage in other areas. Knees are easier to fix than either hips and ankles.
I hear bees have pretty awesome ones.

Sounds like you swim the same way I do.
About 22 years ago I had a small meniscus tear and the flap would sometimes interfere with regular motion. Doc said it was too small be worth the trouble to scope, and he recommended swimming and biking to smooth it out in a low-impact way. I've been biking for 22 years and running for the last 5 with no knee issues.

Sounds more like a meniscus than cartilage to me. Go get it checked out, be a shame if you trashed your knee and it could have been prevented.
I was walking along to day, and thought, "My knee feels pretty good.". Then I got out of a car, and it was not good. Twenty minutes later, it was back to half decent.
Doctor is coming up.

Facts about knees:
1. Knees are mammals.
2. Knees suck ALL THE TIME.
3. The purpose of the knee is to flip out and make it painful to drive anything with a clutch.

There was an englishman who played soccer for I think Aston Villa and the south of Ireland who had at least one very good World Cup. The only way he could keep playing/excercising was on a bicycle otherwise his knees were boogered. I seem to remember he even got a defensive player of the week in a World Cup despite his ruined knees.

Bees Knees cocktail? Such an enabler!
What state is it that does cash only surgery profiled on yes dare I say it FoxNews? Most important part is that they give you pricing. Let me look it up. Pretty certain this is it.
I've lived with partially torn meniscus for years. It certainly comes and goes. The one thing that is a sure fire way to disable me is riding a bicycle. I can go maybe ten minutes before I'm screaming and it takes me a day or a week or more to recover. I would love to ride the bike more I just can't do it.
