iPhone 5c. Is otterbox still the go-to? Any others I should look at? Bonus points if it has a hard edge that I can use to open a beer bottle

based on everyone I know who is rocking the 5c this is the goto

I'm kinda partial to this one:

Today I dropped my phone (HTC One) from a height of about 6 feet onto concrete and it was completely fine. Not a single mark. So glad I have a case on it. It's a Spigen w/ their "air cushion technology" (they have little air bubbles in each corner of the silicone case). So I'm pretty happy with Spigen!
I don't have to worry about getting it wet as the phone comes waterproofed from the factory.
I've had very good luck with my Magpul cases. Popular with hipsters and gun lovers alike. Their main business is to make grippy plastic gun magazines and stocks (seriously). They just got sick of crappy phone cases and made their own.
The buttons are perfectly formed and very "clicky" (most cases, the volume and lock button are mushy). It also protects from drops on concrete.

I second this recommendation. Brilliant!
Much better than an otter or a Griffen Defender: Lunatik Taktic. Makes your expensive pocket computer pretty much impervious to whatever.

Despite the occasional review stating otherwise, they're sold by Lunatik on Amazon and mine was definitely legit. I gave away my Griffin after picking one up. Bonus: best sound quality of any full case I've tried.
My wife's 5s has a Spigen case. They work okay but are about two orders of magnitude down the protection food chain. If you like the "air cushion", check out that internal "impact truss" on the Taktik.
I have a custom wooden case from http://www.carved.com, handmade in the US by a small company, $30 and I got a slim case with a mahogany back with a custom logo.
This is not mine, but the sort of thing they do:
The wife and I both have Otterbox Defenders on our 5c's. The wife has tested hers several times now and had no problems, not even a scratch.
We have been using otterboxes and it just works. 4 years and both phones looked almost new when I retired them. So when we got new phones, it was kind of a no brainer.
3 of us (Mrs. Duke, DD#2, and I) have Otterbox Commuters and they have taken everything we've dished out. We bought about 4 or 5 of them in varying colors so we mix-n-match the silcone liners and polycarb shells at will.
DD#1, who is touch on all equipment, gets an Otterbox Defender, and her phone still works.
I recently switched to one of these:
...which is a little slimmer than the Otterbox, but lacks the separate silicone liner. It does have a little shockproofing membrane on the inside of the case, and a nice grippy satin exterior. So far I like it and it's fun to have all the little Swiss Army style tools.
I have a cheap knock off of the case Keith showed. It is your for shipping if you want it. I decided it was too big, though my kids thought it was the coolest case ever.
