I really thought I was one of only about four people in the world that actually liked The Postman, but I went in to it expecting to like it, so it doesn't qualify for me for this list.
One that really blew me away, though, was Batman Begins. I absolutely hated the Batman movies from the 90s (was it the 90s? Late 80s? The ones that started with the one that had the Prince song in it and Jack Nicholson) and was really expecting more of the same. The wife wanted to see it, so I did what I was told and went to see it with her. I was massively impressed.
Another one that I wasn't expecting much from was The Matrix. A buddy of mine harped on me for ages to go see it and finally dragged me with him and a few other friends one night. On the flip side of that, to the question of movies that were watched with great expectations resulting in great letdowns: The other two Matrix movies plus the new Star Wars series.
end of watch, was bored and turned it on for backround noise, lets just say that movie is intense!
The Love Guru with Mike Myers and Jessica Alba. Completely panned by every critic, lowest possible rating on rotten tomatoes, nominated for a E36 M3 ton of Razzie awards and won three in worst picture, but I find it hilarious. YEs it's dumb, yes it's crass, but it's brilliant. The more you watch it the funnier it gets. It helps if you have a leaning towards self-help stuff and Deepak Chopra as it pays homage too and lampoons that stuff at the same time. We own it and I must have seen it 20 times by now.
I love 80's action movies, and cool guns like the AA-12, and I have a real passion for WWII-era seaplanes. (Blame the Hemisphere Dancer) So when "The Expendables" came out, it was like someone reached into my brain and pulled out a movie. I figured it would be OK but predictable, but it was freakin' awesome!
Last year I expected Elysium to be the great sci-fi movie and Oblivion to be typical Hollywood trash. Elysium turned out to be a popcorn action movie and Oblivion was the great sci-fi movie. With Tom Cruise in it! I E36 M3 you not.
The Starving Games. Was a lot funnier than I thought it would be. Oh, and George of the Jungle with Brendan Frasier. LOVED the cheekiness of that movie.

A Netflix treasure. Trust me.
^I have that movie and haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Gotta get some time.
Yeah, I was sorta disappointed in Elysium. Great CGI, Matt Damon and Jodie Foster turned in great performances but there were monstrous plot holes and frankly the kids didn't look sick enough to make for realism. I know they could have done better than that. But, Godzilla as an end of the world mobile? Cool!
Encino Man is stupid but a lot of fun.
Streets of Fire - Old 80's Michael Pare and Diane Lane film. The acting is kind of cheesy, but the set work, the cars, the motorcycles, and the music are great. Not to mention Willam Defoe is really creepy in it (big surprise).

The Lego Movie . We love the Lego video games, so we figured we'd go watch it, be mildly entertained, and get out of the house for an evening. It ended up being hilarious, with plenty of smart(ish) humor for adults.

Might I suggest "Murphy's War?"

Yes yes yes, I posted about this a couple of years ago when I found it, awesome

Idiocracy flat out scares the E36 M3 out of me. i honestly have moments in life where i regret bringing children into this world, and the parallels in that movie bring each and every one of those moments closer to light. we are doomed.
If you're actually worried about it, have a look at G.K. Chesterton's Eugenics and Other Evils. You can download it free from Project Gutenberg, as it's old enough that it's in the public domain. That one pokes a lot of holes in the premise, as well as the agenda behind promoting that view.
The premise isn't very different from various anti-immigrant polemics of about a hundred years ago. It's just Mike Judge put in different ethnic groups as the "inferior" examples.
It can be a fun movie when it's just "ha-ha, world full of stupid people," but doesn't really stand up to being taken seriously. A lot of it seems to be confusing social status with intelligence. I'm not sure if it was intended to be taken seriously or not.

Fight Club. Maybe it was advertised poorly but I went in thinking I'd hate it. It's one of my favorite movies.
Exactly the movie I thought of when reading the post title. I was dragged to see it with a friend who described it loosely as "Brad Pitt and Edward Norton start a club to get in fights and stuff. It's good, you should come see it." I went in with really low expectations and left actually thinking.

Hunger Games and Legally Blonde. Expected nothing from either and was pleasantly surprised.
I gotta say, I was turned off of Hunger Games simply because since it seemed to be the hot destination for all the Twilight refugees, but unlike Twilight, the Hunger Games movies weren't low-budgety with terrible acting and a E36 M3ty premise. I only watched part of one but it was actually decent from what I saw.

And I was one of those people saying "It will suck because it's a 'Battle Royale' ripoff," but I ended up liking it.
Fantastic Mr Fox
It's a 2009 Wes Anderson stop animation flick based on Roald Dahl's kids book with George Clooney doing the voice-over work as Mr Fox.
It looked awful (solely because my kids really wanted to see it - it was 2009... one of them was little and has horrible taste in comedy) but I laughed my ass off. It was great.

I got hooked watching that one day. Didn't know what it was but couldn't turn away. I don't really know if I liked it or not, I kinda had a numb feeling for a couple hours after.

So how many weeks after watching the movie did you stop singing "Everything is awesome..."?
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
I went in thinking it was going to be mediocre, but ended up pretty much laughing hysterically the whole time.
