There have been a few, but of the most recent, I would have to say Battleship.

I wanted to have nothing to do with some movie based off a freaking board game about maritime war. Even worse, there were aliens; sometimes that doesn't make things better.

BUT, I watched it when it came out to one of the various movie channels to see how gawd awful it was and I ended up really liking it. It was definitely better than I thought. Cheesy at times, some unbelievable stuff, but overall it was good.

So what has anyone else ended up liking.

Fight Club. Maybe it was advertised poorly but I went in thinking I'd hate it. It's one of my favorite movies.

Idiocracy.

It WAS very stupid, but that is kind of the point, which made it good.

"Welcome to Costco, I love you"

Also:

Funny People. It got bad reviews, it's Sandler(!), but it's probably a movie that is closest look into his real life (thus his acting is most believable) and has some great cameos. Not as funny as might be implied (it has a number of serious elements), but still a pretty good movie.

That was certainly a movie that went from "wow this is dumb" to "wow, this is scary."

'Idiocracy' was GREAT! 'Waterworld' was still a stinker but I actually liked it better than I thought I would. Same with 'Beyond Thunderdome' (Max Rockatansky should NEVER show any humanity) but it was more enjyable than I thought. The worst pile of steaming feces I have ever tried to watch was 'Event Horizon', followed closely by 'Alien Resurrection'. Sigourney Weaver's mother must have needed an operation or something.

Oh! One more:

Starship Troopers.

Liked the book. The movie butchered that. It is an overblown action movie, but it has very interesting aspects to it that are totally unexpected. It's silly fun with some crazy overtones.

Super Troopers. I thought i'd hate the stoner comedy and stupid E36 M3 based on all the quotes, ended up loving it.

Idiocracy for kids. Both epic movies.

Pacific Rim. Just shut your brain off and don't think too much.

The Lone Ranger.. Got Horrible reviews because people couldn't tell the difference between serious Western movies and good fun. It's not a Western, it's The Lone Ranger fer cryin' out loud!

I'm going to make a confession here: I thought 13 going on 30 was pretty good. It made my wife happy that I enjoyed it, and I didn't have to put on an act!

Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. Maybe it was just the NPH cameo that made it great.

The NPH one in the second one was even better IMO.

Jurassic Park. Somehow I missed any info on it at all. I went in thinking it was a dumb kids movie. It blew my mind.

Love Actually.

The joke in my house is that I hate all Hugh Grant movies. I mean, I have to say that because I have a functioning penis. But secretly, I have enjoyed the ones I have been forced to watch. Except Mickey Blue Eyes. That sucked.

My wife got Bridesmaids as a door prize. Reluctantly, I watched it with her. It was crude. It was vulgar. It was bitchy. It was fooking hilarious.

The Three Stooges. I love the show, and thought they would ruin my love of the show with a stupid movie. I brought my two sons, and we belly laughed the whole time. I really thought it was well done. We own it on DVD now, and watch it fairly regularly. We still laugh a lot.

I dug the Postman, even if it drug out to 3+ hours. Oi!

I dislike Jim Carry, but damn if I didn't like Dumb and Dumber. I went to see Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas with absolutely no opinion. I didn't know who HST was. Its in my top 10.

Wall-E qualifies to OP question. As does Titanic for me. if you talk or eat something or crap during all of leo's scenes, it was cool to watch. Waterworld makes you think. for a kevin costner movie, thats saying something.

Idiocracy flat out scares the E36 M3 out of me. i honestly have moments in life where i regret bringing children into this world, and the parallels in that movie bring each and every one of those moments closer to light. we are doomed.

anyone care to flip this and call out movies they thought they'd love, but ended up hating?
