There is a HUGE difference in sound quality 'tween win7 media player and winamp. Even not using the EQ, Winamp sounds way way better...

This. Winamp has always sounded better than most players, and the gigantic library of plug-ins will appeal to the geeky-est of the geeks. I am a geek. I <3 winamp so much.

To rip, I use Winblows Media Player set to MP3 and 320 bit rate. I also have I tunes for music availability that I then burn to CD and re rip back to MP3 since Itunes can only talk to other apple products. Little more work, but I only have 125gb of music right now.
I have itunes, but I use Winamp for MP3 listening.
iTunes.
I miss WinAmp, but I'm not doing to dual-boot just to use it.
Groove Shark also.

Bear in mind what I needed was an iPod interface other than iTunes. I like to be able to navigate from playlists and such, so twiddling w/ the iPod all day while its connected to powered speakers w/ a 3.5mm stereo cable wasn't going to cut it.
My wife found me SHAREPOD which aside from requiring some codec to be downloaded is easy-peasy.
It lives in a folder on your desktop so the desktop application manager audit nanny IT services big brother thing doesn't seem to know it's there, and I can get a monitor tan while modelling pieces parts in SolidWorks and jumping from Stan Getz to The Dickies to Kix to mindless shoe-store music compilations....
Ive been running Winamp since 1998 and have never found a reason to use anything else for MP3s.

iTunes (at least on Windows) is a horrible app. A huge bloated monstrosity that carries a payload of additional crapware when installed. I can see why an IT department would want to keep it off the computers, especially if the hardware isn't up to the job.
Winamp here, its the easie to use if you're most familiar with home audio, i think.

I'm not sure if this is the case, but Win7 and Vista "severed" traditional directsound hardware acceleration. Winamp no longer can cut straight to the hardware like it used to so unless the Windows media player has something futzing with the sound by default, it should sound the same.

I just use WMP. Literally ALL of my friends use iTunes, even my Computer Science buddies. I don't understand it; Apple is against everything a computer scientist should stand for.
Wow that is weird. If you're into computers, Apple is killing your hobby AND your job prospects. It would be like a GRMer buying one of those "lump sum rental" luxury cars like the Maybach (McLaren F1s were sold on similar terms).
Exactly! There's a few CS students that even have and swear by whole Mac computers. It baffles me.
I use itunes, because I have an Ipod. Gotta have the itunes, so might as well use it.
Although I usually use Youtube, or get out some good old vinyl.

It has worked fine for me on the half dozen or so Windows machines I've used it on. Sure - you have to uncheck the box that allows quicktime to take over all your media, but beyond that, it runs flawlessly.
