Is there one car that every time you see it on the road, you KNOW that it's going very slowly. You see it in the distance, then in a matter of seconds, you're right behind it.

You'd think Buicks would capture that title, as they generally attract older people. But it's not even close. For me, it has to be the Ford Ranger. Not sure why, but these things must have some kind of radar built into them. As soon as the Ranger hits 46mph in a 45mph zone, it slams on the brakes. Every time I see one, it's the same story.

So what's your slow car?

The Hyundai Accent but I no longer hate them for it. A last-ditch late rental car booking accidentally put me behind the wheel of one of these "automobiles". I understand why they are all dottering around at 35mph. It feels like 75 in a normal car. Those little o-rings they use for tires mixed with a structure roughly as rigid as a styrofoam MG do not inspire a great deal of confidence. I bet those people actually think they are going pretty fast. They are probably white-knuckling the whole time.

On the other hand... they are a barrel of laughs for hand-brake turns in the rain or for parking garage hoonage. You can get them completely side-ways under 20mph and save it like a pro rally driver. Over and over. For hours. Until the hotel desk guy calls the cops.

I was gonna say, "Have you driven a Ranger?" Even gentle turns feel like imminent rollovers.

I am forever being subjected to people pulling out in front of me and crawling along at 25 mph below the speed limit. I can think of two times recently that I've romped on the MPV and blown by them (in a legal passing zone, of course). The last offender was loafing along in an F-150.

Not necessarily slow, but Jeep Cherokee's tend to hog the left lane on highways more than anything else around here.

in rural areas, a worn, tattered dodge caravan never fails to drive at least 5-10 mph below the posted speed limit.

I guess that'll happen when you're stuck in 2nd gear.

I generally have had pretty bad luck with camry's and corollas as well.

But now its all my fault. I have been half-heartedly hypermiling on my commute, but at least I go slower in the right lane and get out of the way whenever possible.

Saturns with original owners and 1/2 of prius owners trying to make everyone green by slowing down. The other 1/2 drive them flat out.

Actually, around here Volvos are piloted by some of the craziest drivers on the road.

I'd say for sure a Buick...and strangely, Corvettes. Most of the Corvettes I see are poking along in the right lane clogging up traffic.

I have actually contemplated setting up a blog in which I test drive and review these cars. You know the ones. If you are waiting to merge and you see one you do your damndest to get in front of it because you know that they will do at least 5 under and most times you are correct.

The worst offender. Any generation Toyota Camry. You can pretty much guarantee 9mph under the limit in a 45 zone.

number 2 would be modern corollas

Buicks have placed high on my list even the supercharged ones.

cadillacs of course

Yes prii

toyota pickups

modern chevy malibu's

In short the kind of cars that appeal to the pensioner set.

It used to be F150s back when I lived up in the mountains. Down here in the flatlands, though, it's '90s Accords and Civics. Sweet merciful Christ I cannot count the number of times I've been stuck behind a Honda doing the caution sign speed around corners and 5 under everywhere but passing lanes, where they try to do 90.

You'd think Prii would be bad down here, but they're either really easy to pass, or doing 80+.

If there is a Panther platform car in front of me, one way or another I'm going to have to slow down.

If the car has a "Coexist" sticker on it, I'm going to have to slow down. If I can't see any part of the driver except for gnarled knuckles clutching the steering wheel, I'm going to have to slow down- and probably choose an alternate route. If I am on a twisty road in the mountains and there is a log truck in front of me, I might as well pull over and enjoy the view for a half an hour or so. If I am behind a NAPA delivery truck, it will be going slowly.

That is funny because every single Subaru around here seems to be doing 10-20 over at all times.

this one guy in a metallic orange mazda 6 I always end up behind on my way in to work. i see him at least 4 out of 5 days a week I drive in. hes always doing 2 or 3 mph below the limit. I GO CRAZY. I want to at least force him to remove the bengals license plate frame from his car so he doesnt (further) sully the (nearly) good name of my team by associating them with his ridiculosity.
