Yet that's exactly what Washington is doing.
I'm not sure about Isky, but some of the race cam grinders out there also make or repair cams for big rig trucks, locomotives, and agricultural equipment - the same work flow for making a one-off race cam is also useful for redoing cams for things with very limited production numbers. If that accounts for a significant part of their work, claiming to be essential manufacturing isn't really a stretch.
Strip Clubs and Gun Shops weren't closing. Yesterday all Sheriff went out and spoke to the owners of these two types of business.
I feel bad for the strippers.
In reply to mr2s2000elise :
Strip clubs, jokes aside that one seems really irresponsible, what can possibly be the justification for that?
And as for gun shops, I know people will assume I'm anti gun for saying it, I'm not. I can see no reason gun shops are essential. Who NEEDS guns or ammo to continue in their daily lives? No one outside first responders who should have all the supply they need.
I dont know the justification. I wasn't making justification. Just reporting from my state, that the owners of those businesses deemed themselves essential.
Gun shops - no clue. Never owned or fired a gun. Not pro or anti gun. Don't particularly care.
I could be Ok with many of these borderline "essential" businesses if they would do the 6ft , wash hands , masks etc ,
but all the construction workers I saw today did none of these ,
Stay safe , keep your loved ones from catching it......
Last I saw Johanns Fabrics was still open (hobby stuff).
The gun shops in Los Angeles are still open! When asked why, the sheriff said they weren't specifically on the state list to close.... when the governor was asked... he said he would differ to the sheriff.... uhm, what?

All construction beyond emergency repairs got shut down in Washington today specifically because of that.

5 local Joannes are closed. They gave the free material to make masks and were closed
gun stores and strip clubs in Los Angeles has their water turned off, after sheriff went to each one and told them to close
I deliver parts for a parts store these days and we are essential because we supply parts to keep garages going. There's so many rules that are impossible too follow but I'm happy I still get a paycheck.
without putting myself under a patio gun sell off is at an all time high because people fear a government collapse. No gun shop is going to willingly close right now!

WOW , is there anything that is NOT on that list ?
What I said in my eariler post and also Gyms. It's possible there are businesses I'm not aware of that are now closed, Half Price Books was doing curbside pickup before the order and Hobby Lobby was still open. The past couple of days have seen a massive reduction in traffic so I'm guessing there was some stuff still open that didn't need to be. We also had restaurants that decided to ignore the previous order and still allow eat in service, they were threatened with having their food and beverage permits revoked for non compliance.

We now have food trucks doing the same thing. One is supposed to have the best tacos.
As an engineer at a manufacturing facility, I think I probably rank pretty high on this list, TBH.
We have certain customers in industries which have ostensibly been deemed essential and made the decision to keep running in only the areas necessary to support those customers with as few poeple as possible, which is, IMO, ethically about the best we can do given the circumstances. Everyone who can work from home is, and I'm not pressuring any of my guys to be in the plant when they don't absolutely need to be. Unfortunately, I'm just at a phase in my current project for one of those essential customers where I really do need to be physically present to do the work, so I've still been coming in every day. I'm keeping my distance, which isn't difficult with only about ten of us in the facility, going straight to and from work, and otherwise limiting my interaction with the outside world. Hope that's enough to keep me from contracting or spreading the virus, as I am taking this all very seriously and trying my best not to be a part of the problem
I am noticing in my travels that there still seem to be an awful lot of people out and about, and have heard of numerous businesses bending or even outright breaking the governor's shutdown order ("Oh well we make ten of this one little doodad once every other year that goes in a medical device, so we're essential!") I don't see that ending well...
Regarding firearms, apparently in PA at least someone decided to make a 2nd amendment case out of it and that's why the gun shops have been allowed to reopen. That's all the farther I'll go with that, lest I end up under a patio somewhere.

Today was the last day we drove distributing school lunches to in need kids. From next week they need to get themselves to the schools to pick them up.
They gave us each one of the left over lunches and they were delicious. I'm a very picky eater and seldom like anything except home cooking. But these were great!
Regarding Gun Shops. There are over 300 million guns in America. Yet only 47% of homes have guns in them. While I have no objection to responsible gun ownership I'm curious if the NRA is downsizing due to poor sales. If the most common store is not a McDonalds but a Gun Shop.
Is this the same sorta situation the coal companies are in? It's no longer politics but simply economics.
While some will react to the new reality of the greatest threat isn't some other guy with a bigger gun. But a tiny little microbes.
I saw a car being detailed at a privately owned Mercedes repair garage today. I wish they had stayed home.
A week ago the CA governor told people to stay home, it worked for most people for about the weekend. Steadily all week I have seen traffic increase while on my to and from work commute. Daily I see more and more people on the streets walking and congregating.
If they get me sick I'm gonna be pissed.
In reply to preach :
You like going to YOUR job, but are unhappy (or even pissed) that OTHERS want to work?
See the contradiction?
There are a lot of people trying to squeak a couple extra days/weeks of income out of their jobs and businesses. What is the breaking point between missing mortgage payments for a person or business. An extra week of work? An extra day? Once you close/go home it's going to be hard to open back up. As a society we see that we should shut a lot of stuff down, as individuals we're just trying to get through this.
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
That's very true.
And the people at the bottom of the ladder (like car detailers) have significantly less capacity to survive.
1 day lost pay for a low wage worker is gonna have significantly greater impact to that person than the impact 1 day lost pay would have to 99.9% or GRMers
My company has manufacturing facilities all over the world, including China and Italy. We manufacture commercial construction materials. According to the letter from the CEO the only two plants that were closed was one in Norway and one in Seattle. Those were because an employee tested positive, and were closed for cleaning.
Meanwhile at my facility my coworker was diagnosed with pneumonia and was out of work for a week, he was never tested for the virus. He came back to work last night still hacking and coughing.
Fun times.

Update: Today ice cream guy was wearing some kind of white mask and what appeared to be from a distance, garden gloves.
Just in case the "stupidest essential worker" is me, I'll be wearing a custom t-shirt to identify myself.
More popular that the gun shops are the Weed shops which outnumber the liquor stores, and they are all open here in Oh re gun. :^)
