i've got a set from the 1950's that i'm going to put on eBay piece by piece. looking for good resources (print or web) for condition and pricing info. i know someone in GRM-land knows about these things.

I have a set from the 50's as well. a majority of it was my fathers, so I will not sell it, but will hand it down. Check hobby shops for a real estimate.
Pics of what you have? I'm looking for cars and tracks. (switches too)

did you get that "motorcycle in a box" from the guy on the other side of lake michigan? if so, i would trade straight up all my train stuff for the bike. or perhaps another old bike.
local hobby shop run by old dude who isn't buying anything right now. he gave my info to one of his customers. dude called me, i described everything, told him about prices i'd seen on eBay, said i'd take $300 cash for the whole shebangabang, and he said "enjoy your trains."
so IMO, berkeley the locals. sweet deal for you, otherwise it's going on ebay piece by piece. my dad got it for my oldest brother probably 1960 (not new then, full GRM approach), my brother has no interest in it now and neither do i, so it's getting broomed to either help fund my ChumpCar race at MIS in August, or it's going to you for something reasonable.
wait, reasonable, what's that?
In reply to Grtechguy:
yeah, i've got two 8B transformers, a left hand switch, a right hand switch a control box for the switches, a remote uncoupler, 3 steam engines with coal tenders (1 engine is parts only, 1 is missing a couple of small bits at the rear, one is complete and looks really good), six sections of straight track, 16 sections of curved track, and about 16 cars. i took a bunch of pix last night, will set up a webshots album and hotlink some pix into this thread.

Angry,
I might be intersted in some cars-especially if you have an observation car. I have my grandfather's set, and have been adding track, roadbed and switches. I would offer a suggestion to use ebay to sell your stuff, and wait until November. I searched hard for reasonably-priced switches, etc. last year and saw more stuff available, and a lot more buyers, it seemed, in November and December, likely getting ready for Christmas/Christmas tree displays.

Thanks for the reference. My public library has a copy!

Here's what I've got:
two Model 8B Transformers (100 watt):
sixteen pieces of curved track, six pieces of straight:
one right-hand switch:
one left-hand switch:
one Switch Control Box (to control both switches above):
one 312 engine with "smoke in hopper" coal hopper:
two other 312 engines with slightly different hopper configuraton (one is a "parts car" LOL) (this pic includes the 312 above as well):
one 627 flat car with girder:
one 944 "Industrial Brownhoist" crane car:
one 945 work caboose:
two 632 Lehigh New England hoppers (the better one is shown):
two 625 Shell tankers (the worse of the two is shown):
one 631Texas & Pacific gondola:
one 929 Missouri Pacific stock car:
one 923 Illinois Central "reefer" refrigerator car:
one 637 Missouri-Kansas-Texas "The Katy" boxcar, missing some door parts:
one 633 Baltimore & Ohio boxcar, missing some door parts:
two 630 Reading lighted cabooses (caboose? cabeese?), both excellent:
You can have it all for $250 shipped.
Well, I'm not in a place to buy all of it, But the crane car and work caboose have my attention. Willing to separate?
While I don't know E36 M3 about model trains, I reckon you'd make a killing selling it all separately! Total hassle on ebay, though
American Flyer: making Lionel trains look like the cheezy toys they are. I don't know why they aren't worth more; they should be.

It's like Harley..a better marketing campaign

No observation car, sorry. Any interest in any of the other stuff? Feel free to PM with offers. I'd rather sell to GRMers than go through the hassle / expense of eBay.
For some reason the Lionel trains are worth more $$.
My Dad has a ton of American Flyer train stuff squirreled away in his attic. He's had this stuff since he was a kid in the 50s. We got it all out when we were kids and had a pretty cool set up for a while. After my Mom realized what a horrific fire hazard we were dealing with, we packed it all away and it's been in storage ever since......and this was in the late 70s!
Hopefully it all hasn't rusted to oblivion. They live near the ocean, so chances are good it's all damaged at this point. Funny though, he's got a bunch of the same stuff you posted. Really really cool trains, with electrical components that look like they could've been in a Frankenstein movie!

In reply to Grtechguy:
Yes I am. I'll even let you make an offer instead of hitting you with an asking price. But before that, check out this other pic of the crane car. The pulley above the hook at the end of the crane has a support on each side, but one of them is broken. Would probably hold together with krazy glue.

Lionel bought American Flyer in the early sixties IIRC.
