Fun little tidbit:

The MacKenzie Brothers came about because the show ran about 5 minutes longer in Canada than in the U.S.

The network wanted something "uniquely Canadian" to fill the extra air time north of the border.

Apparently Dave Thomas said something like "what? Two guys in flannel and work boots drinking beer and eating bacon?".

And the rest is history.

Early SNL had its great moments, but the episodes tended to be pretty uneven.  Second City was usually funny the whole way through each episode.
