I've done three different houses with pretty good success using a company in Texas that sells hardware. They start the process with a discounted 3rd party water chemistry panel, then go over the results with you and make some suggestions.
In each case my problem was iron, but all three got different systems based on the chemistry. I was surprised at how different the water could be in two wells 200 feet apart.
I have no affiliation whatsoever but would use them again: https://www.purewaterproducts.com/
They don't guarantee success but each system did the job, at about the same cost.

Nine months later.
The zero water TDS meter says 85 before and 40 after changing the first filter.
Wow it's my ugly.

My county has horrible water. I can't put in a whole house system yet but I will in the next place. For new I have an under counter 5 stage for our drinking water. Changing filters is always a little horrifying. My first filter looks just Like that.
The whole system was $200 and I can't think of anything I would have spent that money on instead. 100% worth it.
Pfff. My filters look worse than that in a few minutes. I'll take a pic of the first one in the system next time.
Timely update, as SWMBO is making noise about wanting to filter our county supply.
