From Wikipedia:
"Currently the Amarok is available in Europe, Russia, South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. However, a recent exodus of other mid-sized pickup lines in North America has created a opening in the market. VW is in talks with Canadian and U.S. dealerships to introduce the pickup to the continent.[20] While about 1% of vehicles sold in the U.S. are diesel, it's been determined that about 3.5% of Canadians buy diesel vehicles (more than hybrid and electric vehicles). This statistic is achieved with very few diesel options available (particularly in the car and light-truck market). It's estimated that 40% of VW (and 75-80% of Mercedes-Benz) customers will choose diesel when given both options. Canadian customers tend to prefer efficiency and resale value while U.S. customers continue to have a negative impression of diesel engines because of historical experiences with the technology from the 1980s. The company has indicated that they will proceed slowly to evaluate the potential market with a potential entrance coinciding with the newest model of the Amarok.[21]"
IME VW/Diesel types are either the ones stealing used veggie oil and filtering it to put in their clapped-out '84 Jetta, or they're hippies with New Beetles... the opposite of truck people.
I would buy one. Today.
Seriously, if this has a chance to make it to the U.S. I have my deposit ready.
Edit: 4-motion gets 29 mpg? Now I'm inconsolable that I can't get one.
Why can't ANYONE sell a small/mid pickup that gets 30 mpg?

Because then nobody would drop 30k on a fullsize they don't really need
The rear seats should exempt it from the chicken tax. The most likely reason it doesn't come here is that it is much harder to push than a Golf.
Judging from the VW diesel people I know, they would say 29 mpg was ridiculously bad, and only an idiot would ever buy a car that gets less than 45 mpg at worst lol.
Saw it at SEMA, it's sort of like a Frontier with VW stuff. It's ok but I'd rather have a GMC 2500HD.
To prove i'm not a GM basher/VW fanboy.
Not talkIng about it since it hasnt been available here would be my guess. There has always been cool VWs that don't make it here like any other manufacturer.

Oh... we've known about the various VW diesel truck iterations for years... occasionally wishful threads pop up on tdiclub.com... then the bean-counter types (like me) run the numbers and figure out how much such a beast would cost in the US and it goes away... so the answer to your question is basically, 'denial'.
"If we don't think about it, it doesn't exist..."
I was excited about the possibility of the Mahindra when that was a rumor.
I'd not hold my breath.

read below to see why nobody wants to take the risk. This is what they think we think.

29 mpg rated on the highway with 7700 tow rating

ie the new(ish) scirocco

Pretty much that.
I am one of those 45+ MPG gettin' ALH TDI 250K mile guys. That said, for $40K, if you need a truck, there's a far better tool for the job. If you don't really need a truck, getting 29mpg isn't anything to brag about.
It ends up in overpriced midsize fancy land in the truck market without a real bed. Same reason most manufacturers canned their mini/mid size offerings... better bang for the buck in a full size. Same reason most of us don't get too excited about TDI Touregs and the like... they're a whole different market. Big $$ buy-in, and only relatively good mpg when compared against a similarly unneccesary CUV.
Take for example the poster the other day with a TDI Q7, 7700lb. tow rating. Those START at $50K+, and he (and his mechanic) were afraid of using it for towing his enclosed trailer (his wife drives it to haul the kiddies only). I guess relative to the other trophy wife mobiles it's relatively efficient, but nobody is lining up to buy one based on overall cost effectiveness.
