So my rather new to me 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 with the 6-speed Getrag manual transmission has the passenger side low-beam headlight out.  Replacing the bulb does not fix the problem.  Wiring seems to be in good shape.  Hmmm.

So I start digging around the vast wasteland of knowledge that is the internet.  Surprise!  I'm not the only one that is having this trouble.  It seems that Dodge uses the "TIPM" to control the lights?  Can anybody offer advice?  A cheap fix?

Thanks in advance!

The tipm is the fuse and relay box under the hood.  First thing is to check ALL the fuses, then unplug everything from the bottom and look for melted connections, then drill out a couple of plastic rivets,  remove several layers of plastic stuff, get to the printed circuit, and replace the relays.  There is a kit of 4 relays on Amazon.  Maybe ebay.  I bought a set a few months ago.

How good are you at reading wiring diagrams, tracing printed circuits and soldering on a circuit board?

I've been fiddling with electronics most of my life.  Soldered a few little projects together.   By no means an expert, but I might could muddle through.

So there are discrete relays on the board?  I was afraid it was buried in some kind of module.

I need to update my advice, which may very well still be good...  My fix was the three relays that power the trailer lights, not headlamps.  I've done it a few times.

Could still be a similar story, and the first part of the advice is still good.

One mode of TIPM failure is headlights and wipers permanently on, as a sort of fail safe to provide lighting and a clear windshield if the unit fails in bad weather and/or at night.  That said, I'm very confident that the control relays for the headlights are in this unit, and are the solder on solid state type.  There are a number of TIPM repair videos on the tube of you's ... a good starting place is Pine Hollow Diagnostics channel.

I definitely want to go through and clean contacts.  I thought it was peculiar that I was reading like 3.5 volts at the low-beam wire with the lights on.  Not enough to light the bulb, but maybe the driver in the TIPM is still trying?

It seems the redneck wizardry type fix is jumpering the two wires and running both bulbs off one driver.  Sounds like a recipe for no lights.
