Last summer, we took our AC units out of the windows. They both worked fine. We stored them in the spare bedroom, directly on the hardwood floor. We had been getting by without these this summer (these were for my office and our guest room, which was occupied last year) until this week when my wife and I both started working from home. I threw them in the windows and turned them on. The compressors kick on. The fans are working as they should. They do not blow cold air. These are both less than 3 years old. There doesn’t seem to be any indication of rodents chewing through anything. The filters are clean. The coils are clean, though I haven’t fully disassembled them to get a good look.

One of them is a cheap one from Menards, “Denali Aire” 5k or 6k with manual controls. The other was a more expensive one from Costco, Danby 8k with wifi and everything. The app does not indicate any issues.

What could have happened that both stopped working while they were in storage?

120 or 240 V units?  If 240, you may have a house side electrical problem.

In reply to Karacticus :

120, both. And after it failed, I put a 10k portable unit on the same outlet as the 8k... that one is working. So while I'm certainly not ruling it out, I don't think it is on the house side.

Were they stored flat? Turned on end or upside down during installation?

I don't know if window AC units need to let the oil/refrigerant settle back to the bottom if they've been turned over, but if you just put them in I'd give it a few hours to let the oil redistribute and then try it.

Stored flat, and both installed for 2 days.

Pop off the cover, see if the start cap popped.

Unplug it first..

Mine would not fire off the compressor, fan would run, no sign og the compressor trying to start.

Cap was cheap, I think 11 bucks mail order at the time, maybe 20 now...

That rules out the simplest cause.
