I find it very hard to believe you have changed Windows 8 resolution on the fly.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/get-best-display-monitor

And at that, you're not changing resolution, you're changing text font size. And that's only for those fonts that support it.

If you found and downloaded a work around patch, I'd be interested in it.

Not even the pre-release 8.1 updates from Windows fixes this one.

Windows XP on the other hand, even non-administrators can change screen resolution on the fly. Right click, Properties, Settings. Done!

Mostly being grumpy. I think part of my comment was to remind people how far it's come since the bad old days. I could've just said "Get rid of the windows virus" or something.

I wish there were more command-line possibilities on modern applications.

Well, I don't know what to tell you, I just did it. I'm running Windows 8 Pro, and all I did was right-click in space on my desktop, pick "Screen Resolution", changed it, and it changed. It gave me the option to revert or did it automatically in 15 seconds, just like XP.

It does seem that changing font sizes requires a logout, but honestly, I don't think I've ever used that on any version of Windows, and how often would you need to change it if you did?

Pro is a completely different version. Different functionality, from what I've read.

Also seems to function differently with different monitors, CRT types in particular. I've only worked it with LCD screens and monitors.

My experience with attempts to change screen resolution have required a log in/out at the end, and it usually ignored the attempt anyhow. The one setup I did get to respond made things larger, and fuzzier.

Ah, I didn't know that.

Honestly, the only reason I'm running Win8 is because M$ had a sale for $40 for the upgrade a few months back. I figured if it sucked, I could always go back to Win7 and not be out that much money. But it's been fine for me.

Or try classicshell. It's what I use. You can get it on nitenite.com its called "classic start"

I dunno. I'm not using pro, and I just did it again. Same thing, there's a slider for resolution and I just slid it and changed the resolution. Screen shot from my machine:

Just right click on the screen, personalize, display, and here it is. Looks and works just like 7 and XP (when you changed the screen resolution font and icon sizes changed)

I don't have the pro version either and mine works the same way. I got a new computer a few months ago and in the process moved from XP to 8 and I like it.

I'm having fun since my computer is a 27" all-in-one so I can use the regular keyboard and mouse or the touch screen. Driving my great nieces nuts. They are used to their touch screen phones and when I start using the screen and mouse at the same time they can't follow what I am doing.

Also since I am a two-finger typist I can type using the on screen keyboard just about as fast as the regular keyboard.

Huh. Wonder if they've changed it in later builds or something. I'm not a novice to this sort of stuff, so I darn well know how to change screen resolutions and the like.

None of the machines I test drove at the stores, nor the one my friend did buy, have the ability to change screen resolution on the fly. Windows 8 and 8.1., laptop, all-in-one, or stand alone monitors.

I've been running it since beta and have always been able to change on the fly. Maybe it's something in Home (99% of store units) or OEM builds.

I have wondered if anyone who gets one of these touch screen computers even uses the touch screen after the novelty wears off. One that you can take off the screen and hold in you lap, or using one in a kitchen or workshop setting (for example) I can see, but as a desktop, I don't see it. Reaching up to touch what you want seems like it would get real old, real quick.

I've wondered that myself. Doubly so since so many pc computer programs/apps aren't touch screen reactive. I've tried it off and on for several years, but haven't been able to fall in love with it myself.

That said, musicians can love it, it lets them compose directly onto the staff paper. Got to have the right program, but if you do, it can be sweet.

And the pinch to expand or shrink. That can be quite nice. You certainly don't need it very often, but once you've used it, it becomes highly addictive. I would take that over the various mouse/keyboard expansions any day. I just haven't seen many pc programs that took advantage of it.

I didn't start using the touchscreen until I had it for a month. Mine tilts back to a 45* angle so if I raise my chair up a bit it is easy to use.

I don't use the touchscreen all the time. But with W8 it is easier to do things like resizing windows and moving them around using the touchscreen than using the mouse.

What about those of us who use both?

One really aggravating feature of touch screen phones: when people call in on them, while they are talking their cheek will touch the screen. This makes for some randonly scattered beeps and boops.
