How's about both? But I thought that's what parenting is supposed to accomplish.

As a former competitor, little jabs and comments during the course of a game are 100% acceptable and accepted. If you can get under your opponent's skin and get him to make a mistake or distract him, great! I did that and expected the same. After the game, you might point out some good play or effort on the opposing team, but smack talk was part of the in game experience.
That included comments from the stands. "Warm up the bus!" and other chants were all part of the game.

Most concerts I go to are not a competition.
I taunt my fellow roadracers all the time, but it gets really, really hard after they blow a corner on the last lap to allow me past. Those taunts are generally given, and received in a friendly fashion, with the loser abusing himself as much as I do. Circle track, intimidation, abuse and fisticuffs are fine.
No taunting of 8 year olds. If I am 14, and the players are 14, its fine to yell and taunt. If the players are 14 and I'm 55, its not ok. If the players are 20 or older, they are fair game for everyone. If they haven't learned to ignore knobs like me by then, they are never going to succeed anyway.

No kidding... Let's go back to unwussified america.. When men worked 14 hour a day and didn't get overtime and women were possessions. Sounds great..

If we could stick to simple rules like this we wouldn't need schools to ban "hurtful" words.
I wrote (then deleted) a rather scathing comment about what seems to be acceptable behavior ... I've been amazed at some of the comments ... I had always held most of ya in pretty high regard
I guess I was wrong about some of ya .... that's disappointing

I still hold you in high regard, even though you don't know what a hatchback is
