I saw the backup phone to use as a tuning device thread, so I decided I would ask the GRM hive mind my own phone question. I'm looking for an android phone that can do fairly basic tasks; i.e. phone stuff and social media stuff. What's the best bang for the buck.
Who is your carrier, and what sort of budget do you have? I'm a big fan of Android, so my recommendations will be that. If you want a flagship monster samsung note8. Super sweet phone that does a ton for a reasonableamount of cash? Pixel 2. Dirt cheap? Anything from project fi. There's a lot out there.
I recently helped my retired neighbors upgrade from an iPhone 4 and Samsung 3. Found them both unused 32GB Samsung Galaxy S6 phones for $179 each. As a former tech guy, I should be ashamed, but am still using a Galaxy S5, since it does all I need it to do so far... The Samsungs I have worked with have all been very reliable.
Phones that are a generation or two down do most of what latest one will do, but don't carry the heavy price of the latest and greatest.

Hmmm...I'm not enough of a gadget freak to need a flagship phone, so the pixel sounds interesting. Is it too new to have decent accessories? The ability to a waterproof case for when I'm on boats is something that would be very attractive. The same is true for shock and scratch protection. I currently have a kyocera brigadier, which is nice and durable....it just happens to suck as a phone. half the time people can't hear me.

You are playing at the wrong end of the pool. If you want a cheap phone and don't care too much about features, get a Moto G. Very capable Android that is plenty reliable and had all the accessories that you could want. It starts at $179. Don't spend $500 on a phone when you don't need to.
I absolutely love my LG V20. Still has a headphone jack, the camera is awesome and has removable battery. I largely bought it because it offered the best audio out of the headphone jack of any phone I saw though.
But I think JoeyM is right. If you don't need all those features but something like the Moto G.
Fellow Moto G owner here. The G5+ is a great phone. I have the one with amazon ads and it was well under $200. I've had it over a month and has been great.
I got burned on a flagship last time (Nexus 6) and won't do it again, especially when the current flagships are nearly $1k. With my $170 phone I care a lot less if it dies in 2 years than my previous $650 phone that died in 2.5 years.
I would go iphone, but absolutely cannot justify the price of an IphoneX being nearly what my car cost.
