Bath and Body Works does not sell pyrometers, unless you want to use a Thermopen, which might not be a bad idea.
I have a small, non-contact temperature probe from Radio Shack (yes, you read that right). It is helpful in determining variation in temperature across the tread, though I doubt it is super-accurate for reading the specific temp. If you want to get serious, I think a probe is the only accurate way to read tread temps.

That's probably all I need, but I feel like if I'm gonna go through the trouble I may as well just go whole hog

Normally you can tag a topic by commenting something or other including the word canoe, and it will alert a mod there's a bot/spam.
It also looks like there is possibly some discussion on pyrometer choices Here, and if there's not enough to help narrow down - I'm sure you could bump that thread and get more/better responses.
Usually just do manual reporting here:

Not the most elegant solution obviously, but works pretty well! I added that guy to the report.
This is what I did, I should really update the thread. Honestly the spread and readings were not far off each other between the probe and the IR gun but the IR gun is easier to use, for the pro the probe would be better.
