Looking for a replacement engine for a potential $2021 challenge car. Have had so-so luck on FB marketplace, and my local CL is dead. Figured I would reach out to the braintrust to see if anyone has a B18 or B20 available to them that they'd be willing to pass on for cheap (<$500). There is a JDM import shop that has longblocks available for $500, planning to buy from them if nothing turns up in the next month or so.
Thank you!

The $500 JDM B20 is a great deal. My son has bought a few of them. Turbo charge it, give it a good tune & have lots of reliable power. Would be tricky though to get it under the $2021 budget.
What's the formula? Pick 2- Reliable / Fast / Under the $2021 budget.
Turbo was considered, but would be a budget killer. Current plan is not to turbo charge it, just get one of the ~140 hp variants and have some fun with it. I am resurrecting an old setup for modding/flashing OBD0 chips, and I think I have a way figured out to add launch control. My hope is just to replace the current dead long block, tweak the tuning a bit, and go chase a top-10 autox spot on a mostly stock drivetrain. Car + new longblock + wheels/tires + shocks/springs I'm hoping to be under $2K without any recoup. So I guess I'm on the reliable/under budget side of the Venn diagram :).

That's too bad. With the cheap & actually reliable eBay turbos available it's not hard to get to a reliable 250 hp. His EG with a jdm B20 has a great tune & at least 250hp at I think 6 psi. It's fast.
He just bought a 94 GS-R that someone turbo'd 15 years ago & didn't tune & blew up. We're pulling all the turbo stuff off & building an NA B18C1 for it. He has so many other turbos & setups sitting around his house that I'm sure he would sell that entire setup cheap. The turbo has no shaft play, has a nice intercooler, all the piping.
Then we could pull his tune & send to you & you could get burned to a chip & pop into a chipped P28. Would just need to change the injector size. He's using ID 1000's. Doesn't need to but they were originally for another motor project.
