I've made some progress on the painted calipers on the Elise with a dremel and a small stainless steel brush, but other than using them to remove the caliper paint around the bleed nipple that seems to fall into the category of "cruel and unusual punishment" rather than some enjoyable garage time when it comes to cleaning up the whole caliper. Plus, the calipers are aluminium and I don't want to end up with a polished caliper.

I noticed that Horror Fright and the 'zon have a plethora of these small blasting handg*ns:

I've been thinking if I could use one of them with walnut shells I might be able to actually get that paint off and not fully destroy the caliper in the process. Does anyone have any experience with that setup or should I go for something a little bit bigger like one of these:

Or one of these:

Having a functioning kit like any of the above would come in handy for some of the motorcycle work as well so it'll be more than a one-off investment.

I haven't tried one of those, but I suspect I will at one point.

I went with the Harbor Freight sandblaster box Link but I use baking soda in water as the media. It circulates so it's a closed system.

I use it primarily for my motorcycle work as well.

I used this from Hobo Freight. Used to to blast crud off the FR-S' calipers before I painted them. Worked as advertised. I recomend the blasting hood, too. The grit will get everywhere.

In reply to Shadeux :

I currently don't have the space for the sandblaster box, plus the Elise is a bit too big to get it in there . Kidding aside, I was looking more for something that I could use to clean up parts in situ. The sandblasting cabinet might be a good purchase for later when part of the shop renovation is done.

I get it, and looking forward to your impressions.

Evidently whole subdivisions frown on baking soda blasting outside.

Maybe not quite what you're looking for, but Ive had a smaller HF cabinet for years. Its small enough I just throw it under the workbench when not in use.  I added a connector for a shopvac hose to help with visibility and keep it negative pressure inside.

HF doesn't sell it anymore, but northern has what looks to be a higher quality version: Blast Cabinet

I have various portable blasting setups. One like the first link and a hf pressure pot. The only one that gets used is my hf blasting cabinet because it works and I don't have to suit up and clean everything afterwards when I use it.
