I remember considering changing from the corvette but I could not do it.
I will be on testing various cars to make my selection. I am leaning towards the RX8 but I want to test others.
If you can, and maybe Darwin, give a quick summary of each car, so those that can't test all the cars can make an educated guess.
I think I know what I am going to start with, but will play with a few before the race tomorrow.
Testing tonight at NB GP Short with Pro
Green cars are ones we liked. And are leaning towards using personally for the series. The cars in red I have removed from the series. All these cars have some quirk that hold them back but that is the point. These are slowish street cars.
The cars on street tires must not be used with semi slicks. Cars on semi slicks can use any tire available.
I am hoping to see a verity of cars out there but multiple people using the same car is fine.
So everyone please test and select a car so I can assign you to the car and we can get this series off the ground.
Tte testing last night was very productive!!! The cars in red were removed from the servers. I was hoping to start the series tonight but with no one selecting a car maybe a dry run is in order tonight so people can try a couple cars and make there choice with the series kicking off officially next week. Our head of the track selection comity is also taking suggestions for the tracks for the rest of the series.
I was also looking for a general impression of driving style. The only ones I have driven are the RX7, 8 and FTO. The 8 is clearly looser in general but also obviously has more potential for spins (coming out of corners mostly as I remember). The 7 seems to require/want a lot more trail braking but seemed faster in a straight line. The FTO was pretty typical FWD, but did seem to respond reasonably well to trail braking and reasonably fast in a straight line.
The S1 is the fastest in a strate line but has typical AWD issues. Even with the street tires you can melt them if you push to hard for to long
RX8: well balanced, good brakes, quick in a straight line. Handicapped by street tires
RX7: Goofy suspension and tiny tires. Powerfuly, but peaky powerband. Brake pressure is way too high, will require finess to not go directly to ABS all the time. Cowl view is on the roof
GT86: Well balanced, great all around. Limited in front camber
FTO: Quick, makes good noises. A bit pushy on entry IMO, and does FWD things.
MX5: Fantastic. Nimble, very easy to drive. Only downside is it doesn't have quite the power of the other cars.
S1 Audi: AWD powerhouse, but a pig on street tires. Will destroy the outside front quickly. Probably very fast once you can tame it. The exact opposite of the Miata.
Fiat Coup: Brakes. Are. Terrible. All the other cars I made 2 laps in. This one I must have tried 5 or 6 but couldnt get a time as I would way overshoot the braking zones.
Testing went well last night, and I'm fine with starting the series next week. I'll go with the GT86, and if the "just drill it" livery from the mini is available that would be awesome!
I am thinking Audi. But the RX7 is also talking to me.
I was hoping we could have had a late 80s NA 944. I think it would have fit in well.
I am leaning toward a brap brap.
I am pretty sure I can add liveries to the cars, I will look into it. If I can we will need to re-download the pack once updated. Should I also fix some of the minor issues also? I know there was a driver perspective issue in a car and the brake force in the RX7 could certainly be turned down a lot. Anything else?
I don't think any are worth fixing. Its those little issues that make the cars unique.
The only thing I would do is rename them all with the UGRM prefix. *cough* Or come up with a new name for this group, as you are the unofficial brand manager *cough*
@dean, give me some weight, tire, and a dyno plot of a NA 944 and maybe I can slap one together (not in time for this series start)
Actually you could take a 951 and put smaller tires on it. Something like 205 16 and then tweak the hp/tork curves and you would be very close. Effectively a de tuned 944 s2. The 944 was heavy compared to a RX7. In stock form peak crank hp was about 168 at around 5800 and dropped off to about 160 at the 6500 redline if I remember.
I have the corner weights from one of my cars. It was right at about 2800 lbs with a 51 percent front bias. Cross weight was not that good with the right side being about 150 lbs heavier. I was told it was to compensate for a driver. Another poor design was battery placement in the LHD cars. It was at the base of the windshield all the way to the right. Many 944 track cars had the battery moved to a box on the floor behind the passenger seat.
RHD cars had the battery mounted in the rear hatch area.
I really need to look at molding of these cars. A very basic how to would be nice. Sorted in to chapters for various things.
Is the body the same as the turbo car we were messing with? I can take that adjust weight, tire, power, and gearing and make the above car pretty quick.
I don't see how it will be remotely competitive though. You are at FRS weight with a little less grip and a lot less power. Maybe a S or S2 would be more in line with the pack? Either way I can mess around with them a bit.
The NA cars had a slightly different nose than the S2 and the 951. I like the 951 and s2 better. The S2 was about 210 peak HP at the crank if I remember. And the curves were flatter.
