Is anyone else thinking the price, mileage, location, the odd fastener rust and Hurricane Sandy are no coincidence?
Otherwise... I'm totally interested in making an offer. So... explain why I shouldn't.

That thing sat in some water for sure. Look at the rear where- only two bolts of the 4 rusted? And the motor case appears to be a pretty clean cut off from no rust to rust..... To be fair- I don't know what if any electrical is down that far- but salt is a motherberkeleyer and I don't trust anything that SAT in salt water.
Sitting in salt water... How could I confirm that it was or wasn't? The bike looks clean except for some steel fasteners and washers. It does not have any of that "crust" I expect to see (but that washes off with a pressure washer).
Am I just trying to talk myself into something that is close, reasonably priced and optioned the way I want? How can I vet this thing one way or the other?

The only thing I can think of is to do a PPI and have it looked at by someone smarter than me. I have to believe that it sat in some water of some kind, fasteners don't just decide to rust symetrically like that. The other thing I'm seeing, and it's nearly impossible to get a clear look at- is there's some sort of spring linkage on the right side of the bike, behind the heads, towards the trans. It's small, but it looks crusty as hell. It could be that the bike has seen a lot of rain- but rain alone doesn't cause rust like that. Coming from a salt belt state, I've seen me some rust. Maybe it's just me and my inherent distrust of everything, but it looks sketch. Maybe get some eyes on it and see for yourself.
That rust definitely has an air of salty corrosion to it. There are multiple ways to get that in New York though.
If the seller is honest, they shouldn't object to a PPI, performed by a local BMW dealer, at your expense of course.
OTOH, I think Ewan McGregor's GS looked cleaner than that one by the time it finished it's journey.

Another way to check- pull the can and peer inside the exhaust. There will probably be rust in there if it went for a swim.
When the bike is started, what are the two flashing red lights lights? I also agree that the rust is a little odd for that new of a bike.
The spring on the right side is for the center stand.

Take a ride and check it out yourself. The "salty crust" crap could have been just from riding in early spring or winter. As far as the "symmetry" of rust, that could have just been what the cover didn't cover. Or it might have been submerged. There's only one way to tell.Ask!!! Or go see for yourself. Even if it was partially submerged, doesn't necessarily mean it's a P.O.S.

When there's something like this out there;
http://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2003-BMW-R-1150-GS-112864319
I don't see why you'd be interested in that ebay auction.

Because that bike is $800 more expensive to start, does not have a Corbin seat ($600), panniers ($350), top bag ($300), PIAA lights ($300) and it's 3000 miles away ($500 shipping). Not that it isn't cleaner ... but there is a lot of cost between the two.
Looks like year round riding and outdoor storage to me.
He says it's got the boxter engine. Make sure the ims bearing and clutch have been done...
I was not the "Best Offer" apparently. The search continues.
I am a little surprised that you can grab one of these for that price. It's not quite my style but that is a lot of adventure (mostly paved adventure, mind you) for the money.

The 01-04 R1150GS typically goes for 5.5k to 7k and the GSA a little higher in good shape with less than 30k on it. That is why I was so interested here- 14k miles, 5k and nicely optioned up with expensive goodies. I made a BO of $4.5k and didn't get it so... on to the next one.
Keep looking though, because those are WAY COOL.

ABS warning lights, should go out once the bike moves are walking pace. BMW has had those on their ABS systems for bikes for a long time.
