So the planets aligned and I had time off from work, no obligations, and my scooter was actually running well! I'd been trying to get out and have some fun on some kart tracks all summer, but things kept getting in the way. Not this weekend!

The Mid Atlantic Scooter Racing Commission (http://masrc.info) had a race scheduled at Sandy Hook Speedway in Street, MD on Saturday. I prepared my scoot. Its your basic honda-clone I've dubbed "ChinaJunk". Its a FeiYing Xtreme 125cc 4 stroke. Its got minor mods. A horribly manufactured stainless exhaust system from eBay; two Ruckus rear shocks mounted up front in the trailing link forks; a Daytona brand "performance" shock sold for the Ruckus which feels no different than the blown stocker it replaced. And I cut the airbox off. I also applied FormulaV traction compound on the stock tires a couple times a day for the few days leading up to the race. I removed the mirrors and taped the lights and I was ready.

The race field includes pretty much any small-stature motorbike. Pit bikes, pocket bikes, mid-bikes, mini-motards, and the scooters. There were three other scooters there, all running tuned 70cc Zumas or chinese Zuma clones. Ages of the riders ranged from somewhere around 8 yrs old (the kid was FAST) to about 45 yrs old.

Here's one lap of practice:

Here's the standing start of the first race. You get a sense of the diversity. I get passed in the first corner. The cameraman is mounted on a KLX110. About 35sec in you'll see the 8yr old come ripping through the pack of bikes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGUUY4hZJd0&feature=channel

And here's the start of the final race. a 12yr old kid on a YSR50 cuts in on me. I think he's about to swipe my front tire and I panic-stab the front brake. The tire washed out and I took a nap while the KLX rider surfed my scoot down the pavement:

All in all I had a great time for my first time out. I'm sore as hell from that crash and another minor lowside i had in the grass during practice. The scoot broke some plastic, but is otherwise fine. We got tons of track time. Two 25 minute practice sessions and then two 10 lap races and two 12 lap races. Not bad for $48! I'm definately going back. I'd like to get some tires and a longer rear shock. I was scraping my engine case on the left and my exhaust on the right. A shock w/ some actual damping qualities might be helpful as well.

If you've got a small bike (150cc or less) and some free time, you should come check this out. There's similar racing w/ http://njminigp.com and http://ovrp.com in NY.

Sure an glad Sandy Hook is so far away.

Hahahaha! That looks ridiculous. I would be all over that foolishness if I had a scooter or lived anywhere near there.

Are you...in full racing leathers? Because that's absolutely hilarious and awesome at the same time.

How's your shoulder?

Too bad that's too far for me. I have a Chinese 125 pit bike that would be perfect for that.

My 10yr old races his cadet kart there. Its only 45 minutes away. I've rented a Rotax spec kart and hooned it up a bit as well... people are nice, track is good (bumpy though) and prices are really reasonable.

If you have a kart and equipment... $20 all day open track on weekdays.

A few years ago, the national Microcar club show was done at http://www.microcarmuseum.com/ in conjunction with the national scooter meet. Now Bruce has a paved single lane "road" around his property so he/guests can take unlicensed micros out for a scenic drive.

The path is more like a long winding driveway, intended for slow speed cruising. It winds through trees, etc. The scooter gang (a bit "different" but man can they throw a party!) decided this was a high speed race course... and provided endless amusement throughout the weekend.

Nobody was killed (or even seriously maimed) but it wasn't for lack of trying!

OVRP is a complete gearhead paradise. My friends Tim Hannen and Jay de Marcken run it.

TaG Karts - it is the best track I've ever been to, nowhere else is as brutal and technical.

Shifter Karts - a shifter at OVRP is the definition of "high pilot workload". 24 shifts in a 35-second lap. The right gearing has you hit 80.

Rental Karts - they do arrive-and-drive endurance races with the 13-hp Rock karts; unlike other rentals they drive like real karts and one with a TaG engine would be fun.

Motorcycles - they race everything from Tim's Honda 50cc GP racebikes, through the Supermotos, up to any full size motorcycle.

Scooters - This is the first I've heard of scooter racing here.

Road cars - Leave the track, turn left, cruise past the houses, then crank the pace up as far as you're comfortable, it's an epic road. Watch for deer. The Hawk's Nest is about 20 minutes away in Port Jervis.

I have enjoyed many a day there and the Newburgh/Beacon/Middletown area will get serious consideration in my job search next fall

Hilarious! Honestly I'm shocked that any vehicle made in China can withstand that kind of use for more than a few seconds. Looks like a real good time.

Hey now! Sorry again about the crash. I'll be making sure I line up at the back of the pack until I get my bearings.

Great vids by the way. I'm so glad you got that crash on. My Mom and gf get real worried when I say I went racing and crashed twice. Then I show them the vid and its "Oh, that's not too scary looking".

that little honda blob that lots of indycar teams use as pit bikes could be interesting for this... basically a scooter mated with a blob of plastic and a pit bike raised the offspring. I believe it was the EZ-90? EX-90? something to that effect. just throw regular scooter tires on it to get non-dual-sport style treads to use on the track, and go to town
