Car: 1973 BMW 2002
Owner: Bruce Hazard
Location: Denver, Colorado
Classes: Cars of Main Street, BMW
Details: While stationed with the Army in Germany I purchased this 1973 BMW 2002 and took delivery in November 1972. In the beginning it was just transportation, however, it quickly became much more. Over the next 17 years and 330,000 miles I traveled across Europe from England to Italy and to all corners of the US. It was soon modified to compete in motorsports events like autocrosses and high performance driving events at many tracks across the US. In 1990 it was retired and stored for 24 years. In 2016 I completed a 2 ½ year doing most of the work myself. Since then it has been shown at several local events as well as being featured in the BMW CCA Foundation ICON exhibit in 2018.
Car: 1974 BMW 2002tii
Owner: Dirk M. Van Doren
Location: Hobe Sound, FL
Proposed Classes: Preservation Class and Classic BMWs (1929-1991)
Details: The car was born on July 22, 1974 as Inka Oranje with 4-speed manual, sunroof, and dealer installed air conditioning. It spend most of its life in Seattle, WA. I purchased Oranje in 2013 from the first California owner as a result of his divorce. Maintenance involved was to improve reliability and fix some blemishes. The repairs were fine-tuning the Kuglefisher fuel injector, valves, muffler, windshield, body trim, battery, steel wheels, and radio with Bluetooth for hands free calling. Oranje is a numbers-matching survivor, not a trailer queen. I plan to keep enjoying 3 pedal BMW driving.
The car participated in the BMW CCA Foundation ICON - 50 years of the 2002 exhibit
1968 BMW 1600GT
Car: 1972 BMW 2002 Baur Targa Cabriolet
Owners: Julie and Don Bower
Location: Watkinsville, Georgia
Proposed Class: Classic BMWs
Details: BMW contracted with Karosserie Baur of Stuttgart to build its open-top full (1968-71) and targa (1971-75) cabriolets, totalling 2,317 targas. Each was built to order and sold new through BMW dealers in Europe but never officially imported into the US. This car was built September 27, 1972 and sold new at Autohaus Gerhard Schneider (GS Tuning) in Freiburg, Germany to a buyer in Milan, Italy, where it remained until we bought the car in January 2017, imported it to the US, and undertook a major refurbishment. The car has accumulated only 87,000 miles. It sports its original color (Schwarz), engine, interior, and Milan license plates, along with period Borrani wheels, Pirelli CN36 tires, and Petri steering wheel. It was featured in the BMWCCA Foundation "ICON" museum exhibit in 2018 and has earned awards at the Hilton Head Island, Atlanta, Euro Autofest and Autolawn concours. We drive it regularly all over the southeastern US.
Car: 1971 BMW 2002
Owner: Ali Javidan
Location: Sunnyvale, CA
Proposed Class: Classic BMWs (1929-1991)
Details: I have owned this car for 23 years and began a 3 year restoration in 2014. The goal was to build a car that is exciting to drive in the canyons and exciting to look at. The car is packed with lots of period correct authentic BMW Motorsport and Alpina bits, but this car came together as so much more than the sum of its parts. In 2018 this BMW was selected to be on display at the BMW CCA Foundation Museaum to be part of the ICON display. Later in the year this car was featured on Petrolicious and Speed Hunters, it also made the rounds during Monterey Car Week. It was featured at the Concourse on the Avenue, on display at the Jet Center party, and won its class at the Legends of the Autobahn event as well as the coveted "Peoples Choice" award. And my girls think its the coolest :)
Car: 1934 BMW 315/1 Sport
Owners: Dirk and Alexandra de Groen
Location: Coral Gables, Florida
Proposed Classes: European Coachwork Prewar and Classic BMWs
The 315/1 Sport, presented by BMW at the 1934 Berlin Automobile Show, was powered by a 6 cylinder, 1.5 liter engine producing 40 HP.
Desirous to boost its image in the prestigious world of motor racing, the company – as well as many privateers – entered the 315/1 in numerous major races and rallies. With a top speed of 120 km/h and superb handling, it was among the most serious sports cars of its time. It was with this car that BMW's success story in motor racing began. Only 230 cars of this model had been produced by mid-1935 when it was replaced with the 319/1 and later the 328.
This particular roadster has spent its entire life in Germany and was last registered for road use in 1962. After acquiring it in a dilapidated state, the current owners embarked on a frame-off restoration to give it a second life in its original color scheme.
This roadster is currently on display at the BMW Car Club of America Foundation in Greer, SC as part of "Genesis: BMW from the Beginning".
Participating Concours: Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance
The image below shows the car and its (last registered) owners in 1960. It had been painted with a brush!
... and finally, the roadster "as found" in a barn at a farm in the neighborhood of Ludwigshaven in Germany.
Car: 1959 BMW 507 Series II
Owner: Rick Grant
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Proposed Class: Classic BMW (1928-1991)
I have owned a few 507’s over the years, in 2002 the 507 bug hit again. I acquired series II #242 (of 252 built) from a private seller. It had already been restored and set up to compete in the BMW Vintage Marathon of Europe in 2001. 242 retains it’s original numbers matching engine and running gear. Since acquisition it has been brought up to concours standards ad has been shown with great success at Amelia Island, Cincinnati, Dayton and The Car and Driver Concours at Road America. The BMW has a great sound and is an absolute delight to drive.
Invited by the Dayton Concours d'elegance.
